5W30 is fine despite what people say .  Personally I'd go for the 5W40 though, I think the 30 is just to save fuel not to save engines. £10 is a great price even though they are 4L cans.

The thinner oil way find ways of leaving the sump easier, esp on engines that carry a few miles under their belts.

Don't be taken in by the longer life, so stick to the OOF recommended change intervals (NOT the oil or Vx recommendations!).

I seem to recall (at least some) Halfords oils were prone to aborbing a lot of moisture, so if you do short runs, keep a desperately close eye on the breathers, and check for mayo under filler cap.

Probably worth pointing out that if you are going down the halfords full skimmed route it needs to be all or nothing in there, fresh oil change, then any top ups need to be the same fully synth untill the next oil dump, wouldn't fancy the idea of mixing GM Semi with Halfords Full.

Trouble is, I just don't do any of my own work or servicing, so not sure when I would actually use it 

Ask the garage to use it next time you have a service. They usually charge by the litre.

A note on the "thinness" of 5w30 oils:

There is probably more variation in viscosity of your oil due to varying operating temperature between summer and winter, light and heavy engine load, etc. than there is between a 10w40 and 5w30 oil. Oil "hot" viscosity is rated at 100 degrees C when in practice it sees a wide temperature range in actual use, yet your engine copes.

As an oil ages, the viscosity improvers tend to break down, meaning the oil thins. This happens more rapidly with semi-synthetic oils than fully synthetic. By the time your 10w40 semi synthetic oil needs to be changed it might well be a 10W30 or worse, yet the 5W30 will have done a better job of staying in grade.

In other words, it's not worth worrying about. Both are suitable for your engine, so take your pick. I'll go for the fully synthetic that's GM approved. Bear in mind, though that Halfrauds do a 5W40 fully synth as well, for those who don't want to move to a 30.

Definitely go for fully syn over semi if the price is the same or even close- no brainer. 

One word of warning though some fully syn is ACEA C3 spec oil (eg dexos 2 spec).  ACEA say  "Warning: these oils have the lowest SAPS limits and are unsuitable for use in some engines. " I suspect C3 is aimed at diesel exhaust particulate filters and very modern cats.  I would worry about using it in the mig.  Quite a few fully syn oils are C3, especially the expensive ones.  I note the Halfords one isn't.

When cold, perhaps, but once it's up to engine temperature it'll be the same as any other 40 grade oil (and still a good deal thinner than it is when cold).

I've always found comma decent enough I used to run syner-g in my old cavalier turbo which was a high mileage on a never-rebuilt turbo and it saw syner-g from about 90k to about 145k before the turbo let go so can't fault it... Also run syner-d in my daily diesel and again, I haven't broken it yet. So this halfords stuff will do for me

Just had a result on this, reserved online went to the store to collect. As usual with Halfrauds, the checkout girl looked my order number up, then went to the shelf to pick it out 

Not enough there, so had to get some more from the back. Remind me again, the point in reserving if they just pick it off the shelf on arrival 

Anywho, got the deal price of £10 per 5L bottle, I then decided to flash my trade card. I was not expecting anything as it was already on offer, but got another £2 off!

So £38 for 4x 5L of 5w30 Fully Synth.

Not a bad deal that, on the drive back been trying to remember how much GM's 10/40 is on trade club, as I'm sure this works out quite a bit cheaper. Recall £48/50 all in last time I went to a dealer 

At this price I'm considering going back for another 8 bottles this time, assume there is no harm in 5/30 Fully Synth in high miles 2.2 petrol?

Re-reading the above it looks to keep its "structure" longer, so in theory longer changes (not that I'll go on miles, more colour/feel)

Didn't think you got extra Trade off on promo stuff, but sometimes the trade is cheaper than promo, yes right result £8 a hit considering its £34 retail.

No mayo in either of mine, 2.2 has now done 90,000 miles only topped up with 1/2 a litre between changes, the 2.6 I have never had to top up in between bought with 50,000 on clock now on almost 80,000..

I suspect that it is also probably good enough for any and all of the fast fit stylee workshops out there looking for your dosh and is very much price dependant, more so than spec.

tunnie - halfords trade prices are generally not affected by promotions, hence trade price is often higher than promotion price.

So, in this case, I wouldn't be surprised if its £9 normally.  Remember, though, IIRC, this is for 4l, not GM's 5l, so on a par with the tried and tested (in Omegas) GM at £48 for 4 x 5l

I'd initially just use it for the purpose you bought it for, and see how you get on

Personally I doubt the Halfords and Mobil 1 are the same oil (after all Mobil make different types) but I don't think there's any doubt they are made by the same mega oil corporation.  Although Esso/Mobil/Exxon/Comma undoubtedly make many different types of oil, it is often cheaper to mass produce one product and let the marketing departments stick different and fancy labels on it that impress those easily taken in.

Personally I doubt the Halfords and Mobil 1 are the same oil (after all Mobil make different types) but I don't think there's any doubt they are made by the same mega oil corporation.  Although Esso/Mobil/Exxon/Comma undoubtedly make many different types of oil, it is often cheaper to mass produce one product and let the marketing departments stick different and fancy labels on it that impress those easily taken in.

Esso is effectively a trade name for ExxonMobil, and no longer markets POS motor oils.  The Esso refinery at Fawley now only  produces lubricant basestocks.

Just one minor correction, the cans in the offer are 4L not 5L.  Or did you get an even better bargain?  Even at 4L the fully syns are an amazing deal for £10 esp if they're Mobil

Never had to top up the oil in the 9 years I had my Omega.  At oil-change time, I was quite happy to let the garage supply the oil, but then, I've got a reliable garage and they're relatively cheap - I don't begrudge them their profit.

Heaven alone knows how much oil the new car will use.

In my experience, most of the time they haven't bothered picking it, so pluck it off the shelves.  Its been a while since I've had one properly put aside.

That said, invariably, as I work over the road from a Hellfrauds, I order online in the morning, and wander over at lunchtime.

To be fair to them they had put my 4 cans behind the parts counter.  But I had to queue behind a man buying a new numberplate and proving his life history to do so.  I would have just picked them off the shelves except that my order is on a promise from topcashback.

What with that and the £59 120 pc toolkit that is more shopping with them than I have done for several years.
