Possible hotmail issue...
« on: 05 March 2014, 00:25:55 »

Any Hotmail users noticed anything strange this evening?

My inbox had several Delivery failure notifications for items I never sent, and sent box had nearly 30 messages, all about 22:10, with single word headings such as Pro'cured and really and easily...

I wasn't logged on at the time, and have deleted all the erroneous messages in and out...

Owt else to be done :-\

I has that with BT who use Yahoo, and they had been hacked using my E Mail account to send spam which bounced back to me when not delivered.
I had to contact them to change the password not easy with Bt but got there in the end :y

Sounds like your account is being used to send spam.  Change your password and scan your computer for malware.

Is it in your Sent Items as having sent? If not, I suspect somebody just spoofed your email addr, which is very easy, esp if you publish it on any public websites ::)

Plenty of people still use it, I can't fathom why, but then again I still use Yahoo :-[

Sounds like your account is being used to send spam.  Change your password and scan your computer for malware.
Done, neither scan found anything :-\

Just to add, there's only a handful of you whose email addresses I have, so if you receive any random shit, just bin it :y

In which case your address is being spoofed unless you have a particularly weak password

Password is/was reasonable, ie a mixture of things mean absolutely nothing, nothing fancy, but equally nothing obvious either  :-\

Speaking to a recipient, is was a link to an article about weight loss or some such shit :-\

Owt else to be done?

Well they most likely got in to your account then.  If it was a string of words it is likely they threw a dictionary attack at your password hash.  Just straight words are not the most secure.  Using symbols, capitals and numbers in your password forces a hacker to use Rainbow tables to hack your password hash.  Viable RT limit is currently about 8 characters so such passwords of at least 9 preferably 10+ are de rigeur these days :y

All about hashes:

Here is a simplified(!) description of how rainbow tables work:

Well they must have got your password from somewhere to get access to your distro list.  Worthwhile changing it for something with symbols as well as caps and numbers  :y
