Given that choice I would probably take a jag, either spending a little less (s-type) or a little more (XJ) than the £4K.
Though Jags have a reliability reputation, and the S type in particular seems unreliable. Mundano Jag has similar reputation as well.

But, yes, I would need a lot of convincing to buy that Omega. If it was A1 perfect with a proper engine, maybe. But a 14yr old Vauxhall aint ever going to be A1.

That's grossly unfair! The rust gets them long before true unreliability sets in  ;D

Very poor ad, certainly looks nothing special as for £4000 not a chance.

It looks like the seller is unaware they could add value by giving her a polish or at least a good wash, even then does everything work?

It does depend so much on what sort of use the car has been put to; if those 74k miles were "Daisy" miles, then don't touch it with a barge pole! If they were mainly motorway miles, it becomes an altogether more attractive prspect.....

Maybe I've been lucky but the 3 jags I've owned have generally been pretty reliable.  My last one was an S-Type tractor which had the usual for issues and had an alternator failure which caused me to come to a halt in lane 3 on the M25 where swmbo and myself nearly jointly dedicated on the cream leather as I didn't even have enough juice to run the hazards - couldn't even listen to radio to catch the traffic report for the tailback we'd caused  >:(

My neighbour had an S type 2.7, he did mainly dual carriageway runs in a mostly disciplined manner, and reckoned very high 30s over several tanks.

But he did say that hoofing it did drink the stuff quickly.

What a totally pointless engine!

Barely any more time economical than the v6 (our 4x4 x-type would do low 30's so a 2wd s-type should better that) and with all that gubbins to go wrong and a diesel racket to boot!

The trouble with MPG is everyone is different. My neighbours idea of sedate probably wouldn't match tunnie's, seeing as he gets well over 50mpg.

My new soot chucker (sorry Lord Opti) is currently reading just under 33mpg ;), though due to injuring my foot again, I've only used half a tank.

Nice to see that someone agrees with the valuation I placed on mine - £4,000 - and this example looks to be superb.

I bought mine at 54,000 miles, and if there was a short trip issue it has never shown itself. ;)
