Random computer set up question...
« on: 20 June 2020, 19:49:58 »

Once upon a time, connecting a monitor to a desktop involved a single plug with screws...

Now faced with a choice...

1. Traditional VGA
2. USB 3.0
3. HDMI
4. Optical/Digital?

Both monitor and desktop support all of the above. Both brand new and same brand so the question is really...

Which one to use? (and why. If it helps)

Depends. What screen resolution are you aiming for, and what are you using the PC for?

Traditional VGA DSUB-15 is usually limited to 1920*1024 60Hz ish resolutions

HDMI is be higher, but depends on the standard of HDMI the 'puter and monitor support. HDMI 1.4 struggles to do 4K @30Hz. HDMI2.0 can do 4K @ 60Hz. HDMI can also pass sound information to the monitor if you monitor has speakers.

USB3 - pass. Very new and potentially better than HDMI.

Optical/Digital ? Depends what that is.

You missed out Display port and DVI. DVI is similar to HDMI. Display port is relatively new, but supports the highest 4K resolutions at 100Hz+.

Most newer motherboards support 2 or 3 monitors. I've just upgraded my home pc (to an ASUS Q470M + Intel i5-10600K) and that mother board has one D-SUB, one HDMI-1.4 and 2 display port outputs. My monitor is 'only' 1920*1080 and supports D-SUB and HDMI, so I can use either. I don't run games so video performance isn't important to me.

Monitor has speakers, and is 1920x1080

Usb 3 is out as sockets on desktop are both taken, and DVI maybe #4 on my list, don't recognise the logo, but it's a capital D and similar to HDMI.

Will try this one...

Much obliged Malcolm :y

If the monitor is 'only' 1920 and has speakers, then I'd use HDMI. One wire and it'll all work (hopefully).

Display port may end up becoming the defacto standard in a few years time when 4K and 8K monitors become standard. Or USB-C if that takes off. But for now keep it simple.

Seems to be happy enough thus far, but won't chuck out the HDMI cable just in case :D

Thanks for the link Nige :y

Looks like HDMI is the one we require as the webcam, speakers and presumably microphone are all part of the monitor... Two way audio being the definitive difference.

Display Port now identified as the other :y

The current, common PC to monitor connections are:

HDMI
DisplayPort
VGA (but rapidly disappearing off PCs and monitors)

USB is not a PC to monitor connection (but Thunderbolt can terminate in HDMI/dPort/VGA)

Any peripherals on the monitor such as a built in webcam will usually be over a USB connection, separate from the actual display cable.  Also, some monitors have a built in USB hub for easy/convenient(ish) access to the ports, but same applies, separate USB cable unrelated to the actual display cable.

I guess its technically possible to have a single thunderbolt cable and the adapters built in to the monitor, but I've yet to see such an implementation yet

The destructions suggest any of the leads individually rather than using more than one. :-\

Monitor is a current Lenovo one with built in webcam and speakers if that adds any useful information...

I have a pair of Lenovo's here, with built in USB hubs, but no webcams.  Definitely needs a display cable and a USB cable (should I wish to use the hub).

Post up a link to destructions, I'll look later

To me, that looks VGA/HDMI/dPort for video, and a USB 3 hub for convenience and for the camera.

TBH, thats very similar to 2 I have here, only mine don't have the speakers/mic/camera.

(in additional, I've never found laptops direct particularly competitive price wise)

It was more of a 'whose got what we need in stock at a reasonable price' decision.  ;)
