Engine Management
« on: 24 February 2007, 13:35:59 »

Hi everyone - once again need alittle help. The engine management icon has appeared on the dashboard. It did show a few weeks ago but then disappeared after a couple of days. It has now come back and looks as if it is here to stay. I'm only doing short journeys about 5 miles to work and 5 back - not been on a long run for a while.I would like to know if it pointing to something serious. The curious thing when the light is on the car seems to run better and I'm definitly getting a slightly better mpg. Any ideas!

Thanks again

What does the light look light Peter - is it an orange engine block sited above the red handbrake warning light or is it more like a car with a spanner wedged in the sunroof on the left hand side?

Before we can help....you need to get the codes read...On a 2.2 and i assume you have the car symbol with spanner sticking thro the roof........this is the EML on 2.2's

Can only be read with a code reader......get them read and post the results.....then we can help  :y

If it's running better TD I'd favour the Emissions light.  If it was the EML it would run worse and fuel consumption would go down not up.   :-/

Peter, if it is the spanner light TD is right, you'll need to hand over some cash and have the code's read - but don't commit to any work until you've had some independant advice from here first  :y

If it's the engine light - according to the handbook it's ok to drive, if it is either off or on constantly, but if it starts to flash, slow down, if it continues to flash you may be causing damage to your Cat  :-/ as this warning light relates to the exhaust gases.  Many possible causes but often down to an air leak.

Unfortunately the ECU needs to be read with a Tech II to diagnose the problem.

You need to get the eeror codes to find out what is causing the problem.

A dealer will charge you an arm and a leg to read the codes.

You may be able to find a small independant in your area who has the equipment to read the codes at a more reasonable cost.

If you can, get the rouble codes and repost them on here.

Ok, there is a fault with the air/fuel mix that could be caused by numerous things.  Often first fault code will relate to oxegen or lambda sensor which is located in the exhaust and sends a message to the ECU to change the mix - it will also set off the emissions light.

Another possible cause is the Mass Air Flow meter (as it was with mine) but this is generally reliable.

The main cause is often a small air leak in the inlet manifold.  So first job would be to check all the hoses for splits from the air intake box to the engine block (especially the bellows).

I'd also strngly recommend following AA's guide and clean all the hoses and breathers out.  See here http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1162397695

A fresh oil and filter would not go amiss either, your run to work mirrors mine and advice here is to change oil regularly (every 3m) and I also fitted a new fuel filter for a fiver.  You could also try cleaning the injectors with Redex or Forte Injector cleaner.  All of these things will make your engine run sweet and if the light is still on then its time to pay up.

If you can get an independant to read the codes - post them up and we can help further.  But don't worry about the light unless your MOT is due sometime soon or it starts flashing. HTH
