Yeah - strain the oil through an old pair of your tights..

One knock per power stroke doesn't sound good, though :(

Thinking about this - after a run back up from Bristol on Sunday, I stopped back at home, and thought - "I've got a tap"

I can now confirm that there is nothing untoward in the sump.

I have done 20 miles today, since checking, and I CANNOT provoke this noise, again!!

Car is running spot on, loads of power, pulls like a train.

Confused about this one!!

Something previously trapped behind a pulley that's now been flung out possibly? :-\

I've just been underneith the car for another good period trying to work out what's going on....

I can now confirm this is NOT an engine issue. Engine is sweet as a sweet thing that's not sour.

The closest winner is..........

....... Kevin Wood  :y

The noise is definitely coming from the transmission area.

I had the advantage of someone to gently rev the engine, while I was underneith, this was a great help in identifying what was up. It's definitely coming from the bellhousing / Torque converter area.

I popped out the two rubber bungs, one under the bellhousing, and one in front of it. I checked all 6 bolts holding the TC to the driveplate were secure - which they are.

So I'm with Kevin - either, a foreign object in that area... or... torque converter failing internally?

with the bungs out, I moved the engine slowly around a few revs by hand, closely watching the flex plate and TC as it came round. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary..

I have also noticed that the noise is only present in "Neutral" or "Park". When in any gear, incl reverse, the noise is not present.....

If foreigin object... how would that get in there, given both bungs are in place?  :-\

If only present in N or P it's load related, so doubt it's a foreign object, which is unlikely if the rubber bungs were in place anyway.

IIRC, you've had the gearbox out recently, so assuming the driveplate was looking OK, otherwise, I'd have said it's a cracked driveplate perhaps?

Could just be the splines on the gearbox input shaft or the oil pump drive lugs rattling perhaps?

I have heard other auto Omegas rattling a little at idle. Mine does it a little when cold.

Ooh I wonder - might explain why I never could localise the rattle.

Must gas myself in the pit this weekend and see if it's from the box ;D

Hi Kev,

Nope, the issue I had with losing drive was the selector switch. I've had the sumps off, and  pressure solenoid out, but not actually removed the box, that I can recall! So, not been able to have a good look at the flex plate...

Hmm sounds like the planetary gears in the box are tired, if it ran without enough pressure owing to the solenoid problem could well be the box is on its last legs? time to hunt for the manual donor! do it soon and stop worrying? lol

Dead, finished, finito...  :'(

Done 500 miles this weekend. Gearbox went into limp twice during this timeframe. Then, 2 miles from home, decelerrating from 70mph.... series of really REALLY nasty thuds, shaking the whole car..... followed by limp mode. Stopped, restarted. Went to pull away - 6,000 rpm basically gives JUST enough power to get the car rolling. AWFUL noise from inside box. rattle big time, and stinks of hot ATF. Level fine.

I always knew the box was suspect on this one, amazed it did 10k miles really. Typical I put fresh ATF in it not that long ago too!!

So, I have two omega's with gearbox issues. One's dicky, one's dead ;D ;D
