Bending a rod
« on: 09 January 2023, 10:56:05 »

Got a piece of steel rod, probably about 4mm (maybe 5mm, I should measure it ;D), with a 90 degree bend in it.

I need the bend to go the other way (ie, 180 degrees from where it currently goes), am I best off trying to bend on the current bend, or by twisting the rod before the bend?

Get it on the gas hob until red hot and then bend it to where you want it, use a socket extension or similar (to get the required bend radius) in a vice to act as a former for the bend

Do not twist it

The bend is tight, so prob doesn't need a former.

Lemme grab a pic.

Maybe use a screwdriver to form the bend?

i would say its a lot easier to heat and twist the area leading up to the bend than trying to strsighten it and then bend the other way. if you heat it and twist it over a long area theres less chance of snapping it.
if the side is actually long enough you may even manage it without any heat at all hence no damage.

It absolutley will need heat  :y

Twist is never a great approach on a thin item as it thins out the section which is twisted and extends the length

I assume something on the other end (bracing etc) prevents you from flipping it around or modding the other end. The bend will need heat as otherwise it will fatigue the steel at the bend.

Yup.  Though you have given me another potential idea, I'll go get the ruler out....

I knew a circus strongman who could bend a 6mm steel rod over his cock, he was telling me the other day that he can’t do it anymore as his wrists have gone👀….
