Covid - a nice little earner.
« on: 11 July 2022, 09:11:21 »

The job I do is split between three people. One bloke went down with Covid a week ago, so that leaves two of us to split his shifts between us.
This meant I was down for 261 hours this month.
Just got a panic filled phone all from my manager to say the other bloke has now tested positive as well, so that just leaves me.
Manager is a really good bloke and I couldnt let him down, so from tonight, Im basically living at work until the first bloke tests negative.
Going to end up well past 300 hours for the month.
Do I buy a newer Boxster or get the Omega resprayed ?  :-\ ;D

How long can you manage to work 300 hours a month?
How long will the company pay you that without capping the overtime?
Are they actually going to pay you the first 300hours without arguing about it?
What happens when your manager tests positive for Covid and you end up with their work as well?
Is there a reason why you don't want to go home?
How will you say no to the next 'request'?
Have you considered moving to America, where this sort of thing is standard procedure?

Nothing wrong with grafting for a living. If someone wants to work 75 hours a week, whether it's at one job or three, is entirely up to them.

If you're upto it and it's free choice, then get at it :y

I say that having previously worked 29 nights in one month (not great), and four 12 hour nights followed immediately by 36 hours overtime with 60 hours off, before repeating (better as I got two and a half days off every eight days) as a regular shift pattern. Did that for about three months. But summers in aviation can be full on.

And to answer your last question, I would plan ahead to book a couple of weeks off in January and go somewhere warm.  ;)

From a business perspective, overtime is preferable for short term cover as it is significantly cheaper than temp/agency labour. However, if it becomes a permanent feature then employing more staff is a better option, although the costs can outweigh the overtime.

From a staff perspective, overtime can be seen as a benefit, especially if regular, a couple of days to pack large orders or to cover holidays/sickness, and is a positive thing as long as it is distributed fairly.

My last job, it was only offered if one person didn't want to do it. So I used to say no on principle. Especially as said person couldn't keep his mouth shut about it.

How long can you manage to work 300 hours a month?
* Ive done it most of my life. Maybe thats why im worn out and feel like a 90 year old half the time.  ;D

How long will the company pay you that without capping the overtime?
* Forever. They arent tight with their money, and are actually very grateful for me being willing to do the overtime. They would be in a serious pickle if I wasnt willing. Could be why they gave me a 12% rise and a load of extra holiday this year. I now have 14 extra days that I can take as holiday or cash as I choose.

Are they actually going to pay you the first 300hours without arguing about it?
* Yep no problem. See above.

What happens when your manager tests positive for Covid and you end up with their work as well?
He has a senior maintenance man / wingman who would do that, and will also help out with dayshifts on our job this weekend.

Is there a reason why you don't want to go home?
*Well ,most of the time at work I watch TV, browse the interweb, have a kip, and have an endless supply of free tea.
Much like being at home, but Im being paid for the hours.  :D

How will you say no to the next 'request'?
* Why would I want to ? see above.  :)

Have you considered moving to America, where this sort of thing is standard procedure?
* Which is why its the richest most successful country in the history of the world, ever.
If I were younger, and the liberal left werent in the process of wrecking the place, I would seriously consider living there.
Down South obviously.  :)

Didn't the EU bring in a law about working more than xx hours a week?

But if happy to do so, and you get what you want from it, be that finacial or something else, why not?

When I worked in London, I did 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week. I worked that shift pattern until I booked a week off, so that 12 hours x 31 days = 372 hours per month.

48 hour week but individuals can exempt themselves, so like most other rules & regs - pointless in the real world us normal people live in.

The job is 5pm to 8am Monday to Friday and weekend is 12 ours either night or day.
So if I do all seven nights this week its a 99 hour week, plus just over an hour a day travelling.
Done it several times before. Its tough, but doable.

It all depends on the type of work. I, like Albs, had access to a tv. Also a subsidised staff canteen and all the tea and coffee I could drink. Two paid breaks of 30 mins and one hour. I could wander around the place chatting to people, so hardly physical graft. I was living in one room in Fulham at that time which, of course, was just a place to crash when I was working. I buggered off to Liverpool when I had time off.
So work really was preferable to home, and it's not difficult when you are young(er).

Kids these days don't know they're born. We had our two 45 minute breaks reduced to 40 minutes apiece and you'd have though people were being asked to set themselves on fire :D

Working Time Directive i believe it was called. Totally impractible in loads of employment scenarios. Also, think that the UK got a stay of a few years before they had to impliment it. :-\

We are not allowed to exceed the WTD at work even if we wanted to. I know that people have been sent back home if they have/were about to.
