Title: This could have got "interesting" ......
Post by: Entwood on 12 November 2018, 20:20:48
We've been in Londoninium over the weekend with the tin tent, left there this morning to come home, putting things away and hitching up was pretty damp inducing, both Mrs E and I got cold and wet .....  so as she does she puts on the seat heater to warm herself up ..........  :)

We are on the M25, I'm doing 60 mph (max whilst towing) nice and comfortable in lane 3 of the 4 lanes, overtaking  a posse of HGVs who appear to have speed differentials of 0.05 mph and continually overtake each other, when a smell of burning starts .....   followed by a loud expletive from Mrs E as she leans forward away from the backrest ... I glance down and smoke is starting to drift from the area of the small of her back !!!! ...   :(

Switch off the heated seat PDQ, and accelerate a tad to clear the HGVs, but being aware of doing anything daft with 1600Kgs of tin tent on the back, get clear of the outer truck and move into lane 2 ....  still 2 trucks to get past ... smell is not getting worse .... smoke appears to have stopped, but the seat back still feels VERY hot .. Mrs E is perched on the front edge of the seat by now .....   so I continue past the last two trucks and into lane 1 .. trying to decide if I need to stop on the hard shoulder (the most dangerous part of any motorway) ... but we continue as things are not getting worse ........

Eventually get to the next services and pull in to have a proper look ... there is a nice 50p sized scorch/burn mark, although the leather is not quite punctured, right on one of the seams where the small of her back would have been... so I think that seat heater is FUBAR... I'll work out how to isolate it tomorrow

Alls well that ends well ......  but .... if it hadn't of "gone out" so quickly...  or it had ignited fully / faster ... it would have been very tricky getting somewhere safe to evacuate .... especially as there was 60 litres of LPG in the boot at that moment ....   :(

Close shout :o

The heater can be disconnected at the plug next to/within the seat plug under the side trim. No dismantling required, but having the seat fully up and back helps access. Try not to disturb the two yellow plugs :y

That's how they normally go.

Given the number being scrapped, a working replacement seat is probably easiest, but chrisgixer and I did once (actually, might have been twice ;D) stripped the seats and repaired them.  But its a bitch of a job.

I think I have a complete rear seat heater pad that I'm never, ever going to get round to fitting, should you go down the repair not replace option.  :y

The LPG should have been OK, unless you have a leak. :y

The tintent however!  :-X  ;D

The fun starts at 4.49 mins. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AG4JwbK3-q0)  :)

If its leather, the heater elements are stitched into the leather, as under leather pads don't work too well.  Superior cloth uses pads.

The heaters themselves are the same betweem PFL and FL, but the FL has a heating controller in the seat base.

All 4 still work in TBE as well. As did all 4 on the superior Silver Bullet's sports leather at the point it was scrapped.

My drivers seat heater doesn't work. This pisses me off, not because I want to use it, but it annoys me when things don't work.  ::)

I have to turn mine down a notch after a few minutes, but the wife leaves her side on full. I'm sure I can smell her burning.  ;D

My wife is the same. Never heard her say "its too warm", in any situation. I remember we were at the Pyramids at Giza in August and the temp was in the high 40,s.
I thought I was going to die, and her words on the subject were "its nice and warm here".  ::) ;D
Strange creatures.  :D

You'd hate my brothers. 20 years for one of them now.
