Rust Remover Solution
« on: 30 December 2023, 22:17:39 »

Anyone used a rust remover dip solution like this before? ???  Any good?  ???

I've found a couple of old military swords in my attic. One of them has a brass pommel and scabbard and has polished up quite nicely, but the others pommel and scabbard is steel and it was rusty as hell. I managed to clean it up OK with a brass wire brush and a wipe over with WD40, but unfortunately it has rusted quite badly within the scabbard, which in turn has rusted the blade.  :-\

I was thinking of pouring a rust remover solution into the scabbard and putting the sword back in, and hopefully it will get rid of the rust on the blade and in the scabbard.  :-\

It certainly can't do that much harm, unless all that's left is rust and everything just disappears in front of your eyes  ;D

0000 steel wool works on glass and chrome without scratching, might be worth a go :-\

deox-c from bilthamber works very well . 1 litre of powder you dissolve in  up to 7 litres of water to create a soaking bath . around £15 last time i got some .
works on metal without affecting rubber , paint , wood etc

I don't see any point in using expensive potions when a dunk in warm, but weak citric acid will do just as well for a fraction of the cost - you'll make several litres for under a fiver.

Do each part separately, and outside.

Coco cola
Malt Vinegar
Parafin.

Soak rusty items for a few days in anyone of the above products. :y

I wonder what else you have in yourattic!

We are downsizing after a lifetime of hoarding. I havea large box of stuff I am going to donate to a fellow expat friend who lives 45 minutes away. He opened a museum in his large garage . It has become a success with buses coming.

He has military stuff, Anne Brontes clothes, archaeological stuff and like all good museums…. Loads more stuff yet to be catalogued for display. Its a small world he used to have a shopin Scarborough next door to sister in laws shop but I never knew him then.

We are downsizing after a lifetime of hoarding

I think there are a few of us out there.

My Grandparents and my Mother were horders and I seem to have have followed the family tradition.

I have started a massive sort out as I can never find anthing when I want it.

One of my biggest issues is paper work scattered all over the place, car mags that date back to 1977.  I have toys stored that my parents bought me as a baby, Hornby Railway and Scalextric set being a couple of them.

It will be fun. :y

We've been selling our toys, books & items that we inherited from our parents for the last couple of years on eBay & Etsy , some items even sold on Christmas & Boxing day items have gone to virtually every part of the UK some abroad, including the USA & even Australia. Amazingly nothing has gone astray or been damaged in transit.

A lot of things have mysteriously dissapeared over the years and apparently my Brother & Sister know nothing.

Mamod Steam Engine and Decent set of Beer mats along with my Psalters Microscope.

Dont know if anyone will remember but from  the petrol stations I got the full Kings & Queens Busts collection from my Dad filling up with petrol.

Plus my Mum collected for me the Chivers Golliwogs (Full Set) Probably a very controversal collection by todays standards.
