Title: LPG conversion how much ? worth it ?
Post by: Cookie Monster on 28 July 2011, 14:25:54
Hi all... Just musing about whether it would be worth thinking of getting my old girl (and i dont the wife) converted to Lpg.
Its not something i could do myself so, any ideas how much it would cost me ?

is 4 or 6 cylinder
as the kit and fitting prices vary
also depends how much you drive
i had my 3.2 v6 converted it cost me around £1250 at the time wich was a good price
i do about 600 miles a week so i worked out it was well worth it for me as i have had it for 2 years
i reckon my kit paid for itself within the first 6 months

Your problem is that 99.9% of 'professional' fitters are bodging cowboys...

Is it worth it! Depends how many miles you do, how long you keep the car and where the nearest convenient gas station is?

How much depends on what kit, engine power and number of cylinders, what type of tank and size, saloon or estate.

Some places quote £1100 and fit in a day. Others £2500 in four days depending with or without a rental car.

Diy kit can be had for v6 for £600 to £800 depending on tank.

I've been thinking about this myself.  From figures others have given it looks as if fuel costs would drop by around 8p per mile on average for me - say from 20p to 12p per mile.

So an £800 kit would pay for itself in 10K miles, £1600 in 20K miles etc.  This is a VERY rough ball-park approximation.

Lots more to be saved if you are a London congestion charge victim.

Didnt the congestion charge change recently (when it shrunk) and no longer exemption for LPG? Or did I dream that ;D

For those trying to do calculations, my 3.0l auto and 3.2l auto return 18-20mpg on average, driven hard, and I usually pay 70.9p per litre (although LPG prices vary wildly, and can cost 79.9p)

I think it's absolutely worth to do, here in Hungary it's cost is 1000EUR about but depend on type of engine (line or V, number of cylinders etc...) LPG using is "greener" than other not to mentioned that it makes your car a longer life period! Don't need to change oil so often, because there is no solid burn product.  :y :y :y
BUT real what is real don't accelerate like MadMax who use LPG... :'( :'( :'(

Hmm... looks as if you're right, there's no mention of it any more.   :(

Let's hope they don't ditch the LPG tax advantage as well!

What... £10/year? Or the duty difference, which they have committed to maintaining for another 5 years?

As for the CC exemption... It was only for vehicle/kit combinations on the Powershift register which, AFAIK didn't include a single Omega ;)

To the OP... If you work on a saving of around 9p/mile you can make your own mind up ;) :y

Yep, that was always a joke invented when a few brown paper envelopes changed hands between the motor industry and the government, IMHO. Only certain (new) cars, only certain LPG kits, only fitted by certain gorillas LPGA certified "en gineers". >:(

Yes, I was indeed thinking of the duty difference.  But if there's a rock solid policy guarantee from Her Majesty's Government, I'm sure we have nothing at all to worry about.   ;)

I wouldn't... Actually it's probably a very bad idea!

If your car is up together and running properly, convert it if you want. Buying another car could easily be a money pit ;)

I would rather convert a known good car, rather than buy an unknown car with an unknown conversion on.

And this is exactly what I did. Twice.

Yes it could be that! Depend on how much you know the car you want to buy! But if you could buy a converted car in the same and wellknown type it can be a very good choice! Not to worry but keep going with open eyes! Good luck!

From what we see on here, rarely does a professional install give trouble free motoring. Entwoods a side there are usually issues.

...and rarely does a non OOF omega either tbh. As with most things knowing the beast is key, a gassed omega works well, but it's two beasts in one to understand.

Buying your own omega, knowing it, servicing and maintaining via this site, then converting to dual fuel as knowledge on the subject grows is the way forward for most.

So as said, far better to convert your known good omega IMO. There are some fackin awful professional installs  about.
