General Car Chat / Re: Car Tax Scaremongering
« on: 17 January 2025, 15:21:45 »
Noticed in my web new feed there's an everywhere increasing amount of clickbaity headlines about 'tenfold' cat tax increases for drivers of petrol and diesel cars...

The reality?

If you drive a car over 76g/km and are currently paying £10 A YEAR, there's a good chance it will rise to £110.

Sure, in percentage terms that's a hefty increase, but the reality is that it's the price of two coffees a month. If you can't afford two coffees a month, the reality is that you already don't own a car.

The other increase is for more expensive EVs so I really wouldn't worry too much about it.
Sod that, my cat can buy his own food if that's the case.  ;D
;D

Did you find one? I'm sure I'll have one if not!

Reset the parking position for the wipers as it decided that middle of the screen was near enough yesterday. Topped up the PS reservoir.

You'd have thought all the 'laundering' that goes on in some of these establishments, the possibility of catching something nasty would be pretty remote.  :)
LOL, surely not!

then took my omega 2.6 for MOT , it passed ,no advisories  :)
then late afternoon I took the Astra G 1.4 for MOT ,passed, no advisories  :)
I've been very busy recently ,so didn't prep the cars as much as i would normally .

omega has a crack in the plastic side tank of the rad by battery ,weeps slightly when hot .
I've got a new rad from partsinmotion ,just need to find time to fit it  ::)
Wow, good results!

There was some variation with the thickness of the thermostat housing casting. Whether that variation extends to the seal as well I couldn't say, but it's been a while.

And to echo Stemos point, it's easy to get wrapped up in something to no benefit.

Oh, it might have been the thickness of the flange vs. the length of the bolts? I remember some combinations that caused some frustration, at any rate.

It was both. Some had a thinner flange so needed either shorter bolts or washers to space them out and some had a different width channel and corresponding seal.

Virtually every time you pull into a petrol station in an Omega someone will smile or come over to talk about the car.  :)

You'd want to see all the known area's and prod them with a screwdriver MOT testers tool. Rear door is rotting in the usual place, I suspect the front legs and sills aren't much better. Got to say, a late 3.2 Elite or MV6 is much more preferable than that one to me and pretty much all of those are starting to rot in all those places now.

I think you're being very optimistic there, as most are much more likely to be one robust inspection away from being condemned. The MOT tester's tool is gentler than a screwdriver...

I was being polite so as not to offend the remaining Omega Owners on an Omega Owners Forum!  :D

One of mine has had rear arches, sills and chassis legs worked on (Pictures in Gallery) so all to aware of the rot spots :(

Still enjoy driving the car though, even though they completely outclassed in every way by pretty much anything more modern in the same market segment that the Omega was in.  :y

Beautiful Omega, but £7k is a joke...

Yes, especially as the MOT apparently expires this month :o  Why is it being sold with no full MOT?  Hidden problems? ::)

On the subject of headlight bulbs, the best car ever for changing them on has to be a P3 Volvo V70 (and probably some other Volvo's), pull up two metal 'legs' in the slam panel area, slide out headlight, remove multiplug. All of about 15 secs!
Remove the rear cover - two plastic clips, one metal - and you can see every bulb, only one that is slightly fiddly is the sidelight / position light although that might be easier on a car without Active Bending Lights.

Have you tried cleaning the laser lens? Back in the past I had success resurrecting a few units by cleaning the lense with a cotton bud and some de-ionised water (this means taking the lid off the unit and getting stuck in!), it's quite surprising the film of dirt can accumulate.
