« on: 06 October 2024, 15:06:36 »

Time for an engine service and coolant change on the Omega.
Cant remember which coolant I used previously and I think OAT and other types cant be mixed ?
Any way of telling whats in there at the moment ? I know its pink  :D

OAT type of antifreeze is correct for the Omega and is generally pink (ish) in colour.
Older cars used IAT types of antifreeze which generally was blue but also sometimes green.
They can't be mixed as you say.
When I first got my Petrol Blue 3.2 Elite several years ago, the coolant was blue which made me wonder what was in it. I drained it and flushed it through thoroughly, then topped it up with pure water (we are in a soft water area), ran it up to temp, drained it and flushed it through again, and there was still a slight blue tinge of old coolant coming out, but after repeating it again it was all clear so I then added the correct amount of pink OAT coolant for a 50 / 50 mix and topped the system up with water, and it was pink right through to its last coolant change last year when the cambelt and water pump were done.
Whatever you put in it last time, once it flushed properly, it should get rid of it sufficiently to add the new correct OAT stuff with no concerns.
Set the heater on high when flushing which should help flush the heater matrix too.

Its always had pink coolant so maybe safe to assume it already has OAT spec in it ?
Its likely  I would have used ECP pink last time I changed it, and would be OAT I believe.

If it's already pink then it's probably the correct spec.

It's been a while but i think last time I got mine the dealer was cheaper for the coolant than Euro or the factors so worth giving them a call.

ECP are very expensive now but Dealers even worse now in my experience.
Halfords or Motor Factors for things I need straight away and ebay for other stuff is the usual approach now.

Don't mix it with tap water buy 5ltr of de-ionised water, then just mix 5ltr together, 10ltr of 50/50.

I've always used 'Corporation Pop' in my cars' cooling systems .... you can when it's nice soft water from the Lakes  ;) :y :y
