two questions
« on: 14 October 2024, 14:04:36 »

hello all, as i said in my presentation i have a 1998 omega b 2.5td, and i have 2 problems with it. I've bought it a week ago with 250k kms(+/- 155k miles).
-first is the cruise control that does not work, e have the stalk, and the throttle is electronic. but i can't make it work. the previous owner told it came from factory with it.
-the second problem is the courtesy light that does not work when opening the door or with the lights switch. I've changed the bulb but nothing. the curb light works fine.
i apologize in advance for my bad English.
thank you all for the reply's.

The cruise control...

1. Is the car manual or automatic?
2. Do the brake lights work? If not possibly the brake switch.
3. If manual, is the clutch switch working?

Otherwise, Fuse 15 is the fuse for cruise control, and there's also a dedicated relay for it on the TD cars, but I don't know where this is located. The TD cruise control stalk is wired differently to the non TD one.

For the interior lights...

1. Do the map reading lights work?
2. Do the interior lights work if you open a rear door? (Note that the rear lights can be switched open, on and off separately... read the manual to confirm the correct position). Replacing the contact switches might solve the issue, but remove the old ones first to ensure the correct type as there are variations.
3. Have you checked the bulbs?
4. If none of that locates the issue, then suspect the light switch itself... They should come on with the switch pulled out regardless of door position.

The BMW engined 2.5TD engine needs a unique stalk, it has a 2 pin connector. All other Omegas have a 4 pin connector.  Ensure you have right stalk.

No programming is needed on that engine for cruise, its enabled by default, just needs the right stalk and switches.

Ok :y

For the cruise:

Test the clutch switch for function and the fuse and report back.

For the lights:

Rears might be because of the switch position, but it sounds like the main light switch is at fault.

Small update. And I forgot to tell in main post.
So I was wondering why the previous owner applied a aftermarket central locking to this car, curious as I am I removed the right hand trim and found out that the original central locking module was missing. So I have an module from an Opel astra G from 2001 with the same plugs. I connected it. But nothing happens. The key fob led blinks but no response from the module(maybe is not the same, or not compatible). The question is, is the missing module anything to do with me problems?

Actually it might...

Normally, when you unlock the car, it turns the interior lights on for a fixed time or until a door is opened and the door switch over rides the locking ECU.

The flash of light on the key only tells you that the key is trying to do something.

It should be possible using Tech 2 to reconnect the keys to the module.

You might also find O P C O M will work, but you run the very real risk of turning the car into a paperweight.

I have the "My Naff Code Reader". But only use it to see and erase error codes. I don't have the know how to do that. And I don't know anyone here with the tech 2.
What if I buy another module? Will it be plug and play?
The module I have from the astra has the letters CL. And I saw somewhere that the omega is MU letters.

This might be helpful... Engine ECU, transponder ring, keys and Central Locking ECU.

It should all be plug and play, but double check with the seller that it's from a like for like vehicle to yours. Also if you can get the Car Pass card for the donor vehicle then you can use it to get the remote keys working.

Technically, the cluster and stalks aren't required from an immobiliser point of view, but in your case the stalks might be handy for the cruise control aspect  ;) I also note that there's no door lock cylinder.

Also, think out loud, and if anyone knows better... Would resyncing the key buttons work for programming the remote ECU? In the way one might after replacing the fob batteries as per the hand book :-\

That only resyncs the already programmed keyfob, not programs in a new one.  In essence, that procedure relearns where the key is in its rolling code.

That makes sense. So if the Astra unit has been correctly programmed to the car, then it might work, but if it hasn't then a different approach will be required...

No, they should work as long as the car are the same age, ie both '98.

You simply swap the remote fobs. Just make sure that the transponder chip remains in your key... This chip is the immobiliser part ;)

Ok. Thank you.
Friday  I will go se if the car is from the same year. I think it is.
I'm really sorry for all these questions, but I've allways loved this cars. And this one was cheap(at least in here) around 1000€(around 830£). It is in running orde. So I'm really forward to put it basically in factory setting. Apart from the exterior(it has a body kit, I think is a steinmetz replica, it's just a front and rear bumper lips and side skirts) and probably an 16" wheels( it as 15").

Sounds like a good project :y

Start with the basics and then worry about the cosmetics. I think Euroland had more choice of wheels, including a good looking 17" five spoke on the newest Executive models 8)

When I had issues earlier this year with the random / intermittant failure to lock  / unlock on my 2002 3.2, and problems with the interior light staying on, after trying all types of checks with no success, I fitted the central locking ecu from an identical age / model of 3.2, and changed the remote part of the key fob with the donor car and everything has been fine since. The ecu was however the exact same part number and ident number. I looked at removing one from a Y reg 2000 year 2.6 CD in a breakers, but decided against it as it was a different part number and ident number to the faulty one in my car.
The point I'm getting to is should the OP be checking that the ECU from his friends car be the same part / ident number  as the original from his car? If not, will it cause issues?
And if it is likely to work ok, why then did Omegas have different models / types of central locking ECU's to what would appear to operate the identical functions?

A saloon module would allow for the third button on the fob, also, it's possible that different spec cars and model years have different levels of alarm... Plod cars, for example don't have interior sensors fitted even though they have the wiring.

That said, if the fob and CL ECU are matched from the same donor vehicle, then they should work but you might lose the ability to open the boot from the fob if you fit an estate module to a saloon.  How much of an issue that might be is subjective as both pre and post facelift cars have alternative ways to open the boot.

The only other significant item to consider is that early Prefacelift cars use a different remote system to 95.5 MY cars with a separate fob rather than the newer integrated type.

good morning to all, and thank you for the reply's.
so new update, courtesy lights are on(still need to go get a new central locking module), but have no timer. I've managed to find the haynes manual with the electrical diagrams. so managed to find the wires that i needed to jump.
about the cruise control, the stalk i have is with 2 wires plug. and i checked and i have the clutch switch, but didn't have the time to test it.
another thing i forgot to ask is, the airbag light is on, and i found the passenger pretensioner yellow tag to be a little out. not even half of it. could that be the reason for the air bag light? i did not yet connected to the car, my laptop has gone kaput.   :o
I've checked all the plugs under the seat, for the airbags and everything seems to be ok. the car has not been in an accident, but the previous owner told me that about a month and half ago they removed the passenger seat to repair the motor for the seat rise, and after that the light stayed on.

If the airbag wiring is unplugged without disconnecting the battery it can put the light on. Needs the fault code clearing and as long as the wiring is ok then should be sorted :y

As you have Haynes, the.diagrams will guide you to the wires to test for the clutch and brake switches. But don't forget to check the fuse as well and also the plug to the cruise control module (under the bonnet, and connected to the throttle cable mechanism) if your car has a cable throttle.

Then there isn't one, it's controlled by the engine ecu ;)

So the only things you can check are the switches, stalk and wiring :y

Not sure how beyond trying a different stalk, and perhaps dismantling it and checking for obvious wear/damage.

But your first point of checking is the fuse ;)

Closely followed by the clutch and brake switches...

still haven't got time to check all of those, work has been chaotic, i have checked the fuse( fuse 15 i believe) and it´s good, started to remove the plastic cover in the pedals, but have not yet checked the switches.  maybe today I'll have the time to do it.
also I've started to look for a "new" stalk, they are not easy to find here in Portugal. but i managed to find one with 2 wires( there's a lot of the 4 wire ones), if everything points to the stalk i will buy it. could not find brand new ones with only 2 wires...
