3.0 oil filler neck....removing.
« on: 05 November 2024, 09:47:19 »

Can I remove the long part of the oil filler neck as on the 3.2's. Just had a quick go at seeing if it comes off, but being a bit on the cack handed side I didn't want break it if the 3.0 is different.....twist and tug,  just tug or leave it alone? :-\ tia.

From memory, I think its held down by one of the cam cover bolts. Need to slacken or remove the bolt then twist anti clockwise.

Carefully lift the tab that sits over a bolt head and twist out like the cap/3.0 one :y

Exactly this. It's a bayonet type fitting, same as the cap to filler neck.  The is a tang on the bottom with a hole that locates over the head of one of the cam cover bolts.

surely removing the filler neck makes adding oil so much more difficult!
I'm guessing the reason for removal is due to mayo forming on it ....  I never had a problem with mayo on my V6 when I had one  :-\

Its common on shittier oils, like Castrol, even on longer runs

The 3.2's have both been done yonks ago, but on the 3.0, I'm getting a few seconds of misfire on a cold start up, plus a couple of minutes of white smoke which is slow to dissipate plus a small amount of mayo in the filler neck. But just having just done a 500 mile round trip without issues, other than the coolant changing in colour to a sludgy brownish colour, also oil checks out clean,I'm thinking possibly head gasket??  :-\

beyond rare to get oil/coolant mix due to HG on Omega V6. Oil cooler, yes, that's oil in coolant (but not other way, generally)

Ooer! didn't think about the oil cooler. This 3.0 is an early facelift circa 2000, did they fit the oil cooler upgrade to stainless?

Unlikely unless previously done.

That engine was built around 20k ago by Daz, loadsa time and money went into it, but Daz never did build sheets etc so must presume the oil cooler was sound at the time of the work being done. Luckily if that was a worse case scenario, Rock Autos still keep them for the Catera at £300 a pop. But further investigation will find out what's really needed. Strangely enough, I had planned to park this car and one of the 3.2's up for the next six months, as there's not much point in taxing them for the winter, that's nearly £800 that pig face won't be able to give away :y

I am just pondering this issue, and I think it’s important not to condemn anything too quickly :y

My 3.2 (with multi layer steel head gaskets) has developed a brief miss from cold this winter which clears very quickly (sometimes after a restart). It also loses a teeeny amount of coolant (250ml from here to Gibraltar and back plus a few months running around). I know that’s not HG, it’s just a minor annoyance. But I think given the size of the exhaust and how it behaves in the cold (appearance of mist) some mechanics may misdiagnose.

Your change of coolant colour would be more likely oil cooler than HG, the layout of the waterways dictates this. But if it’s just brown without sludgy deposits that’s also inconclusive. I’d also expect excess pressure if the coolant is being infiltrated by combustion gasses etc.

You may not be aware but I think I live less than 15 miles from you these days. Let’s have a look at it one weekend  :y :y

Long shot, but do you have links to any threads etc on here surrounding the rebuild of this engine? I may be getting muddled, but do think I vaguely recall reading about it before and recall there were perhaps a few small modifications?

I'm afraid the details of the build are lost in the mists of time now...probably 10-12 years ago. It's the white ex Met car out of the scrap yard, and you may well remember the full on strip down that you did, after which it still wouldn't run, so we gave it the DNR order. And that was when DAZ was flat out breaking cars, and he had a low mile 3.0 engine which he spent a fair bit of time going through it on the basis of whatever it needs, do it. And when dealing with Daz, itemised bills weren't really an issue, as he just knew his stuff and cash was King then. ;) So the car has been trouble free for all these years, and I guess crap happens on occasions. ::)
