Diffences between vented/non vented rear brakes...

Solid rear discs, 286x12mm, have a fixed caliper in two halves and are marked 40. These are available new.

Vented rear discs, 286x29mm, have a fixed caliper in two halves with an extra 8mm section fitted between the two halves and are marked 42. These are not available new.

The only differences are: piston diameter, the extra section and longer bolts securing the two halves together.

A new solid caliper can, in theory, be adapted to replace a rust damaged vented one by splitting the calipers and using the bolts and inserts from the vented caliper. Replacing the seals between each part is advised as they can harden and become brittle.
