My astra has done 88,000 miles and I have never had any dpf problems. Regen used to be every 300 miles or so, now down to about 250. I never switch off until the regen is finished. It really doesn't need anything like 100 mile journeys, or even 50. As long as the engine regularly gets hot, and you know when a regen is happening, it's fine.

There is a bloke who comes to the Bristol ABS meet who works in the maintainace dept for south wales ambulances. He says all the emergency services are having problems with their Diesel DPF's. As you might expect, lots of short rapid journeys, followed by a cold stop and no chance for the regen cycles to complete properly.

They also have issues with the engine valves coking up on direct injection engines for the same reason - the engine never gets properly warm and with no fuel going past the inlet valves to wash them clean, they coke up quickly.

We had the same problems with the recovery trucks; they spend a lot of time just idling which does the DPF no good at all. My Canter needed a new one(we tried several ways of cleaning it, all of which were unsuccessful) at about 100k miles and a cost of £2500. It was not Lynne's best buy as the engine expired(we think due to badly diluted oil) just after it was paid off, and disposed of rather than earning money.

We are well past the point where complicated solutions to problems are worse than the problem itself - the expected, design life for modern engines is going backwards.

Finally got round to replacing the headlight on the battlebus.  Managed to blow the bulb in the process, but had the original (standard, not brighter type)

Don't know if it was across the entire range but the Volvo V50 got dpf from 2005.For the V70/XC70 I'd still go with the 5 pot 2.4 [preferably manual rather than auto]diesel rather than the 4 pot 2.0.

That's pretty much my take on them, but this particular car, although the "eco" version, otherwise has every factory option, which makes it more interesting... I am as uncertain about the lack of awd as the engine, although retrofitting the rear axle, whilst insane, is do able.

Especially the later cars with a polestar tune... 235bhp... and why later plods have a certain appeal :y  Still no sports car though :D

The Barge is faster :D it's a fair point though. Abit of grunt to keep away from all the ditherers is no bad thing. There's a limit to the handling because of the 3" lift over the V70, so the 2.0 isn't significantly slower than the D5 on paper...

Trying with MOT'ing now, rather than waiting until Feb, as I think my days of rolling around under a car in the snow are becoming more difficult to drum up enthusiasm for ;D

My MOT's are about ten months apart as that's when it's ready for a service. No point in going back twice, especially as the 'claim' the MOT is free.

Fitted the turbo boost pipe on the Mondeo which turned up from ebay today, took it for a spin and normal service restored, with no coolant leaks either!  :y
