Quick dumb question before I kill myself under a Car.
« on: 28 February 2014, 21:43:19 »

Ok the 3.0 DPG Plod is almost ready for her scrapy heaven, the last thing Im taking off this weekend is the LSD and springs. Here's my brain dead moment, if I remove the Diff (prop and shafts) and then the rear springs, is the back end going to hold up with the shocks, or is it going to flop around like a plate of jelly?, if the later, whats best to remove first, Diff then Springs?

You need to undo the shocks and lower the supported diff to get the springs out... then springs are out of the way for dropping the diff/driveshafts as a single unit.

If you pull the drive shafts first, then the diff you should be ok provided you lower the diff as far as you can before unbolting the 3 subframe bolts.

If your pulling the whole back axle then I would drop the rear subframe mounts, then the front mounts from the side of the car then undo the shock top mounts from in the boot... that way you won't be dropping anything on your head :y

You're welcome btw :y

Here's a dumb suggestion?
If you have already removed lots of items, maybe the car is now light enough to roll it onto its side, onto some old tyres or whatever, and safely have access?

Nice thought Ron, rented premises, have enough problems parking me cars there, let alone turning them upside down when they have died. Apreciate the reply though.  ;)

Understood!
The thought occurred because I had a neighbour once who regularly serviced anything on the underside of his citroen 2Cv - I know, light as a feather - on its side, not upside down, resting on a few old tyres so as not to damage the fantastic bodywork!

Don't try and support the car on just it's shocks! The springs hold the weight of a car, the shocks are just there to damp the response of the springs ;)

Even with nothing in it I doubt the shocks would be stiff enough to hold the car up... but at that point you could jack/axle stand/bricks/wood block just about anywhere you wanted on the floorpan..

Subframe is the main structure. Held up by the the donuts centre bolt on the jacking point under the doors at the front, these hinge to drop the subframe to get the springs out when undoing the rubber blocks rear of subframe(between the petrol tank and dif)

Given the spring removal means supporting the subframe up on the dif via a jack , as Al says, I'd remove the springs as the guide first, then bolt the subframe back up.

Then remove the dif and drive shafts from the subframe.

Jack car up support on axle stands placed on rear donuts.
remove wheels, remove drive shafts, undo shock lower bolts, undo and remove shock top nuts, undo and remove shock lower bolts and remove shocks, rear springs should fall out, undo propshaft to diff bolts.
support diff on jack undo diff bolts lower diff, unfasten  abs wires.

if only wanting diff out just remove drive shafts and leave springs and shocks in situ.

Cheers for the replies, need the Diff off, rear springs would be a bonus but not that important at the end on the day, either way I need to make sure I can wrench the car on the back of a Tow Truck as the Front end Rack is completely off the car now.

Might have to play it by ear.  :-\
