Air Bag Light
« on: 10 February 2007, 17:55:44 »

Gents,

Had fault with my airbag - airbag light came on - and when I looked, the mechanism behind the actual airbag was screwed (that's my story - not going to mention prising the casing off and having loads of uncoiled ribbon on my lap)!!!

Anyway, replaced this 'faulty' part and put it all back together.

Air bag light still on.  Does the light need resetting by Tech2 (showing for the original fault) or does it mean the replacement is knackered or installed incorrectly?

yours in thickwittery,

xxxxxxx

I did a comparision on dianostic capabilities between Markjays cheapo and my real Tech2 on 'another' site ;)

It does appear that cheapo ones will read some cars better than others, eg it wouldn't diagnose airbag on my car, but would reset light, but can diagnose airbag on AA's car...

Ive used it on my omega quite a few times.....its ok.....it used to be able to read gearbox ecu....but carnt anymore since vx changed the ecu and upgraded it.....ive noticed that sometimes you have to be patient with it.....ie it always reads engine ecu first time....other ecu's it sometimes messes about before reading the ecu.

Also used it on my VeccyB ok

Your laptop does really need to have serial port or a port replicator with a serial port.....usb to serial adaptors seem a bit hit and miss to me getting them to work with the cheapo tech2

I don't really see the dilema here  :)

If you are not willing to spend more than £100 on a code reader, then you can't be without the Cheapo TECH-II as there is nothing else really that does what it can do... and it once reads the engine ECU so anything else you get out of it is a free bonus! If you want to sepnd some real money on diagnostic kit than there are other products worth considering etc which are well bellow GM TECH-II price. Just remember that it cost less than one visit to a Vx dealer. You do need a laptop with serial port though.

I agree entirely. If you already have a suitable laptop (ie, reasonable spec and with a real COM1), then for £30 - £40 its gotta be worth a punt.  As long as you are aware that it is far from perfect, and won't always read all systems on the car, you won't be disappointed.  A command of the Hungarian language may be a bonus though....
