Title: Engine out corrosion check
Post by: GrahamK on 03 May 2021, 18:13:47
I'm planning an engine and gearbox swap, as discussed on another thread, however, while the engine bay is empty it seems an ideal time to have a closer look at the structural elements, particularly around the front chassis rails. I've looked as best as I can before I bought the car and again when it was on the ramp being MOT'd last year. It looks OK, but I plan to strip off the factory underseal to have a proper look and then re-apply. I bought a tub of good underseal and some Supertrol.
In all honesty, I would appreciate any pointers on what to look for and where.

Regards,

Graham.

Have a good look at this THREAD (https://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=147318.30). I wouldn't bother removing the underseal until after a good dig around all  of those areas(and the passenger side equivalent of the steering box mounts) with a screwdriver or chisel.

If you've got the engine and box out, then repairing the tops of the chassis rails will be easier as you've no reason not to move the oil cooler and AC pipes.

Rust. Everywhere and anywhere. :D  You will never have a better opportunity to find it all,  cut it out and weld in new metal.  ;)
