Carpet Removal
« on: 22 December 2020, 15:59:20 »

Hi All

I have had a pre facelift sitting for over 6 years and is fairly rusty. However i have always wanted to learn to weld so thought why not try it out on the omega. 90 percent of the interior will be removed to check and repair any rust holes. Do you need to remove the dash to get the whole carpet up or can the dash stay in? Out of everything the dash is the only thing i really want to leave in place

Thanks

dash removal not required, just seats and plastic trims around doors, though its easier with centre console removed

If your doing it with a view to putting it on the road again at some point, you would be advised to pull the dash to properly inspect the bulkhead from the screen to the floor. Also, when it comes to putting it back together, renewing things like the heater matrix becomes sooo much easier ;)

How easy is it to get the dash's out tho? Looks like alot of wiring behind it to mess around with?

Most of it unplugs from the A posts ;)

Someone put it in there, and if the rest of it is out, you've more space to play with...

I wouldnt ever take the dash out personally. I would inspect the bulkhead from the engine bay.

I have taken the dash our on a breaker. I wouldn't entertain it on a keeper...   ...if the issue was serious enough for it to need the dash out, it would quickly be a breaker.

If the car is a keeper, and your looking to repair/ restore to a high standard, then dash out, and remove everything,  weld holes, replace matrix, and evaporator,  do it properly..

Obviously looks a lot there but what was the difficult bit about it?

Removing dashes is just fiddly, time consuming and tedious.

Putting them back is a horrible job. Then you spend a load more time making everything work, stop creaking and gluing broken trim pieces in place.

Not forgetting cleaning blood from knuckles/cut fingers off of every piece of trim.  :y

Doing it with the column in place probably...

It's only held in with screws, nuts and bolts... Not black magic... Obviously a certain amount of patience is required, but if the job's worth doing...  :D

Remember, DG, that photo only shows the easy bit.  To do as you suggest also means all the climate and air distribution and a lot of the loom.

Then as Nick W rightly says, reassembly is the hard part.  Then repeat to remove the rattles.

Lots of pictures as you go. ;)

Depends on the future of the car, but if you're going to go to the trouble, do it properly or just wash the moss off it.

From the triviality you seen to imply it is, I'm guessing its not something you have ever done ;).  Its non trivial even if you don't ever want to put it back together.

If it needed any work in the areas you can't reach without removing the dash, then it needs to go to the Heinz factory. No Omega - and I think they are still one of the best cars out there - is worth it.
