"I've been using 10w40 semi with the same spec (ACEA A3,B3 ,API SL/CF)"

As with any car, classic and modern, as long as the oil is exactly the same spec as the original, then that's fine and any cost saving is a bonus.
The point is that two oils of the same viscosity are not always identical and not always suitable for every vehicle requiring that viscosity grade.

The one oil Best avoided is Castrol. The Omega always turns it into a septic sludge, regardless of grade.

And don't use 5w30 unless it's been fed it from new. For all the reasons Nick mentions.

Last oil change on the Barge used Tescos finest and the next will be Helfrods finest.

I agree Jonny  ;) always check the spec  :y
As for "cheap supermarket 710" like Asda
Both offerings of 10w40 semi from Asda meet the spec for Omega V6
Carlube Triple R 10w40 4L £32 and
Auto Drive 10W-40 5L £21
however it's bleddy spensive  :o
to get 6 L would cost £56 for carlube
to get 2 x 5 L of the Auto-drive would be £42

but you can get 4 jugs of 5 L (SAE 10W-40)

API SL/CF

ACEA A3/B3

MB 229.1

VW 501.01/505.00

off ebay with tracked delivery for £47 or less if you buy a 20L drum with a few clicks of the mouse  ;D

Cheaper options available without comprimising on spec  :D

MB229.51 all the way ;)

My factors is relatively expensive for some things, oil being one of them.

Tbh, I haven't tried MB, but suspect the local Truck/Van dealer may well be cheaper for a larger quantity... If the next car is according to plan, then that will need 9 litres every 3 months, so a bigger tub could be cost effective.  :-\

Now Vauxhall tradeclub oil is no longer available :( I've been using 10w40 semi with the same spec (ACEA A3,B3 ,API SL/CF)
with no issues  in my Omega, 3 petrol astras ,2 diesel astras and the tractor Zafira A .
usually just order it to be delivered  from TB's favourite on-line auction site  :D

popped into a local factors recently ,which are normally pretty good for filters ,fluids etc
"got a 20L drum of 10w40 please ? price ?"
factors "What's the reg"
"I'm putting it in several cars " ::)
Factors "what are the reg numbers "
so I sprout off a few reg numbers I can remember  :P
Factors " computer says they should be 5w30"
"whatever ,computer don't own the cars and i'm doing the job"
Factors " well we will have to put a note on the invoice saying you are using the wrong oil and we only have 1 drum @ £62"
I declined their kind offer  :-X and purchased 20L of 10w40 semi "elsewhere" much cheaper

that's the first time I've encountered the oil police  ::)

Yes, that is what my Vx parts guy has told me when I tried to order the 20 litres for the price of 15 :'( :'( :'(

I get my oil from here now:

https://www.smithandallan.com/

Excellent mail order service, a decent range of oil specs and less hassle than going to a motor factors. :y

mmmmmmmmm Having fitted loads of Crossland filters when I used to work at Hellfrauds I recon you would be better at using the box and throwing filter in bin . Somewhere Halfords have a deal with ECP and ECP own Crossland , for my own cars I always used Bosch, Mann or other good make filters and oil from work at trade price apart from the oil (wink wink)

Something I noticed about the pollen filter in the omega is it seems very slack where it sits, thought it was something I hadn't done right, but seems the same on my other omega I just bought. What's the point of a pollen filter when you can drive a bus round the gaps in it's holder?

Either the wrong filter, a poor imitation or incorrectly fitted.

GM ones fit like a glove.

For anyone interested, the 10/40 oil I have collected from my Vx dealer has a plain white label with both the Vauxhall and Opel symbols printed on it, with specification, which cost after discount £13.68 ex-VAT.

What has surprised me, although it shouldn't given inflation and GM disappearing, is the price of the spark plugs.  In 2018 I paid, after discount, £6.30 ex-VAT each.  Now after discount, £8.60 ex-VAT each.  So instead of a total of £37.80, now £63.60 ex-VAT.  It all certainly adds up!! ::) ::)
