Mercedes use cartridge filters, but the engineer that came up with that idea put the cap pointing upwards so that you can access it by opening the bonnet and doesn't make a mess*...

*as long as you use a large enough bowl for the amount of oil in the sump :-[

That makes sense.
Designing an add on cannister that fits instead of spin-on filter and does nothing better is pointless

Haven't had a problem with the canister / Lid on all the V6's i've owned to be honest, only issue with the filter being on the side is the inevitable oil drain! I do like the setup on the Astra 1.7, Corsa 1.2 and many others where the filter lid faces upwards and you remove it from above - far less mess!

Here's an excellent example:





top one is the basic spin-on filter used since the fifties, that was originally used on the Vx V6


bottom one is the cannister type after being 'improved' in Russelsheim. It might do something better, but you'd need a Phd and several whiteboards to demonstrate it
