The solenoid earths through the starter motor so if the brushes are shot it wont make a connection (circuit) , ohm meter will test it.

Pretty sure it's the Starter motor/solonoid. Got a mobile mechanic coming to sort it tomorrow. Would do it myself but don't think the knees will take it at the moment. ;D

Starter Motor replaced and all is good again. :) :)
Off to the bank to arrange a mortgage to fill the tank. ::) ::)
