The right to complain....
« on: 16 July 2015, 20:34:45 »

Lady opposite. Cat lover. Lives alone. All round good egg but can be nosey although not relevant to this.

Gets a knock on the door. Turns out to be a neighbour 2 doors away but in the next road, who's house backs on to the house next to hers. He's complaining to her because she feeds the birds in her garden. (Cat securely locked in the house, no cat flap, it rarely goes out anyway unless she checks the garden first)

Why is he complaining to her? Because the pigeons crap on the roof the their conservatree. His wife isn't happy "it's disgusting" she says. Especially when the family are round for tea. She closed the door on him. Thought no more of it.

Next thing she gets a letter from the council. Official complaint. She's told to stop feeding the birds. All food should be kept in sealed containers to counter rats. All droppings should be cleared away and the garden kept clean.

She has a bird table, with a single tubular mesh bird feeder hanging from it. She does not feed pigeons.

Somewhat annoyed, she rang the council, to be told they had a complaint and are duty bound to follow it up. After some "discussion" council confirmed they had no power to stop her feeding the birds.

A factual post.

I have a bird table in front garden[Maureen used to love it],the "problem" if such there is,is that you can't pick and choose which type of birds feed from it,so I'm glad to hear that nothing can in reality be done and that bird table can stay!!

P.S. some of my neighbours also have  bird tables in their gardens and as far as I know no-one in the neighbourhood has yet complained about bird droppings.

This sort of thing really pi$$es me off, not the complaining necessarily, we all get on one another's pecks sooner or later and going round to talk to a neighbour is the right thing to do.

What gets my goat is councils and other bodies (read TV licence, PCSO's etc) trying to bluff you that you "must" do something when in reality all they can do is ask you and have no power to make you.

Without being able to visualise what is happening, I'm erring on the side of the complantive.  If she is enouraging birds (and he has said Pigeons) then she should be put in front of her family and shot.

Sky Rats are taking over.  We must arm ourselves against them (and Dog eating Gull's too!!!!)

I have a (wood)pigeon problem too, but not a crapping one (well, ok, they DO crap, but that isn't it) - the real problem is the noise they make. I don't mind birdsong, mostly, but the wood pigeon "call" is the most annoying in the world and they do it for EVERY daylight hour, pissing me off to the ultimate!
If any Oofer has an effective way of killing these vermin without harming the other bird population I'd be delighted to hear about it. Putting poisoned birdseed on a bird table, with a notice "For wood pigeon only" probably wouldn't work?

1 post says she's doesn't feed pigeons
2 why does the neighbours assume because she has a bird table she is feeding pigeons
3 even if she is feeding pigeons, why would any sane person presume the a house 3 gardens away is directing pigeons to then shit on their conservatree
4 why hasn't any person in the process wondered if it's even slightly possible that
A it might not be pigeons
B the culprit bird may have nothing to do with being fed in anyone's garden
C what Dna evidence (or otherwise ::) ) is there that the food in said poop came from said garden.
D could it possibly be, by some wild stretch of the imagination, that some random bird took a dump without giving a shit who's conservatree it lands on.
E why haven't the council got anything better to do? Like, oh I don't know, telling people they have no right to complain about something so pathetic about a bird taking a dump. ;D

Too many people have too much time on their hands to make trouble! Nature does, what nature does.

Round here we now have several birds of prey and I often see one feasting on normally a ring dove. Unfortunately, pigeons seem to be just that bit big for it to cope with now it has eaten all of the local population of ring doves, so there are still plenty of those around.

Probably.  Birds, unike most Mammals (Humans Included) are not allergic to Capsaicin.  Birds will happily eat the Chilli from the Plant.

I'm really split on this? Cannot agree with going to the authorities, but I'll be popping next door shortly to complain too. Little old lady keeps putting slices of bread out in the front garden every afternoon. Don't get me wrong, I love our little feathered friends, but 'every' darned afternoon there's about 20 or 30 gulls wheeling around above my cars, have you seen the size of their dumps..???  >:(

I'm cutting down a neighbours tree in Autumn..... The neighbour doesnt know it yet.  I can handle the sap, I can handle the leaves, I can't handle the bird shit which lands on my car every 5 minutes the car is parked there.

Overhanging my property, so it's going!

We have had a problem with flying shitting machines (pigeons) down at my end of our street earlier on this summer.
A mates moggy got 3 of them in his garden.
3 more met a 0.22 hard point pellet each early one morning while they where happily cooing and shitting all over the place.

A couple of days later, i'm talking to the local rug munchers down the road and the conversation drifts to what pets we have.
Me, I have a big daft (or evil if your not friendly) German Sheppard.
It turns out my rug munching friends down the road keep pigeons and quite a few have gone missing recently  ::) :-X

Gonads makes his polite excuses and leaves .................  :D :D

What gets me is the lack of moral courage of some to actually go and talk to the person concerned and explain the issue.  Then by some miracle a two-way dialogue occurs and problems get resolved or points of view clariffied without this p!ss-arsing around with the council.

Some people need to grow a set of balls.

My mum works part time and when she comes home she loves nothing more than to feed the birds when she comes home. Since moving she's always fed then and she's attracted some really interesting ones in to the garden. A blue jay, a gold finch, couple of robins etc. the usual suspects are wood pigeons.

If someone knocked on the door and told her to stop feeding them I would laugh in their face and shut the door.

End of.  :y

Wonderful creatures aren't they Webby. We've had Gold Finches and usual small birds pinching the the soft cotton stuff off the pampas grass in the garden for their nests. Blue tits nesting in a the wall of the house after we removed an old over flow pipe.

We'd feed them if it wasn't for the cats. :)

Look at it this way Chris  ::)
Cat food is more expensive then bird food.
Buy the bird food and then open the door and let the cats feed on the birds  :y ;D
Less bird shit, cats love you forever and you save a few quid too  :y :y ;D ;D

Its all well & good feeding birds in your garden, but we need to bear in mind that care needs to be taken to use a method which wont allow rats to access the food. Most of the country seems to be plagued with rats nowadays, and its never good to encourage them to feed (and then inevitably live) near houses.
