Water drain on a diesel fuel filter?
« on: 11 June 2012, 21:48:32 »

Got a red dashboard light on my diesel Vitara bus today. It is two wavy lines with a lid. Haven't got a manual but suspect it is a problem with the fuel filter. Water drain? Is this an easy job to do and is it something that needs doing on a diesel regularly?

Normally a knurled plastic knob on the bottom of the filter with a little spigot on it. I would advise you to collect the drained fluid in a container so you can see if you got all the water out ;) Don't empty it right out or you may get air into the system ::)

As said above - I have drained mine on the Omega before, but found no trace of water. There is just enough room to hold a milk bottle under it (don't drop it like I did). It should be easy enough to find.

If it is a clear (Glass)? filter you may be able to see any water in  the filter, you will an obvious line, assuming it is not all water........or pour the contents into a jam jar or similar........ :) :)

Had a go at this today. Turned the knurled nut and hiss - out came air. I don't know much about diesels at all. I stopped at that point. Is that normal? Perehaps I should just keep going until liquid comes out. Engine off or dare I say running?

The dashboard light I have on( not an Omega) - how does a diesel know that there is "water" in the filter? There isn't any wiring or a sensor that I can see on the filter.

usually on the bottom of the filter, in the bit you turned t loose the water!!,
when this came up on the pajero i just put a new filter on it!! much better solution than trying to drain the water off!! :y

I don't think you can get air that far in the system without the engine struggling. Perhaps the Hiss was air being sucked in?  :-\
