I think Watchdog is a poor programme, not fighting consumer causes, but trying to make sensational TV.

In the case of the BMW article they were trying to play on it shouldn't happen to BMW, because they are BMW. We all know BMW's reliability is approximately no better or no worse than any other marque.

As to the "specialist", they were scrapping the barrel. Its not entirely uncommon to have to remove engines for some repairs - and a timing chain isn't exactly a service item, but also would be expected to need maintenence after a good few miles have been covered. FFS, some cars need the engine removed to do the spark plugs!

For the cases they showed, another non-story. They should have picked the real cases - the low milers suffering.

They should do a story on all the other drivers who have to put up with BMW drivers on the road - viewing figures will double.  ;) ;)

A few extra BMW's not on the road, bad thing?  ::)

It's luck of the draw, I've had 17 other of exactly the same cars which have had no problem. I've got this one which will not stop giving me grief, and it's still giving me grief to this day because of BMW's piss poor workmanship, which they will not accept responsibility for. I can honestly say this one I've got at the minute is one of the most unreliable cars I've owned, one for the engine issues, after that was carried out under warranty, I've had nothing but problems as I say because of a terrible dealership with poor 'technicians'.

Agreed - but all manufacturers have what used to be called Friday cars.  My point is that Watchdog were playing on BMW being "better" than others. We all know, in reality, they are no different to any other. And that includes the dealers and their technicians.

And you know that pains me to stick up for BMW :P

It's spot on and I couldn't agree more, the dealership network is pretty woeful, their 'technicians' don't know what to do unless a computer says do it, although their drink machines make a lovely cup of coffee, the customer service is terrible, and the reliability as you say is no better than any other Manufacturers out there, hence the reason I've got a 2011 car with 141 faults codes (8 pages of A4)  ::).

I know modern cars have enough sensors to detect a passenger scratching their arse, but 141 is really impressive :o

Well this is from one fault diagnostic read:

The only bit BMW have diagnosed as not working properly, showed up on another bit of paper as working really rather well.

You would think that if these Friday cars like Del's  are so few and far between they would have a strategy which took them back and replaced them before the PR damage starts to permeate the ether - maybe far more prevalent than we imagine.

Exactly! BMW (UK) are unbelievably not interested in pretty much any fault(s) I'm having. They are trying every little thing to get out of warranty work despite the car being covered until next April.
