At what point does the Omega become a classic  Who dictates when the car is a classic and becomes tax exempt and cheaper to insure ? My mv will be 18 years old next year so presuming it wont be long before its tax exempt 
I think the Omega will become collectable given how many are just being crushed or broken up

I don't want to disappoint you but:

tax free status is currently pre '74, and is supposed to be a rolling exemption. Which is 40 years. Omegas are a long way off.
Classic status is meaningless, and people apply it to all sorts of stuff. 1100 Allegro anyone?
Collectable? I doubt it. They are at the useful but cheap banger stage. Their status is just to fade into the background. For example, when was the last time you saw a Victor?

"Classic" for insurance depends on the insurer - some were anything over 10 years old, others it's 20 or 25.. there's no real definition.

For me I don't think it'll ever be a "classic" (nor is the Senator, Carlton etc except maybe the Lotus Carlton) - classics are things like your Mk1 Cortinas and the like. But that's a personal thing

My uncle once owned a 1965 Victor 101. At the time (I was only 5) it looked huge.

I hear that 53 plate 2.6 MV6 automatics are very close to reaching 'iconic' status, Mr Emd.

If they are finished in the rare and desirable 'Star silver' then the lucky owner can virtually name his price.

A 'classsic' is anything on four wheels that is in short supply.....(read old)

Like, as already mentioned, the MK1 Cortina. When I was a nipper these mass produced tin-cans were literally 'ten a penny' and virtually worthless.

However, as years turn to decades and more get 'cubed' a miracle takes place.

The MK 1 Cortina/ Viva/ Austin 1100/ Triumph Spitfire/ etc..etc..etc .... suddenly become 'classic cars'...

So yes, when only a few hundred Omega remain, it will become a sought after classic.

did have but i filled somebodys boot up.  :)and had to make room for houseee type tat.
still got 3.0L slowly using up the bits off that.

A few hundred left of these old Omega classics then , i think once they pass 25 years people will look at them more as collectable . Best stock up on a few more spares and rust preventer  If you want to donate your car to me mr opti i would be truly thankful

I plan on keeping the Omega until the petrol barrels runs out!

Obviously I'm fortunate from being able to learn mechanics but I'm going to use those skills and make sure she's around forever.

As for being a classic.... certainly not at the moment. 20 years time then yes I think so.

It's down to the insurer really. If it's a second car and doesn't do a huge mileage then it's worth trying a few companies. Let us know what happens as I tried a few years ago without luck.

Like the al-aggro Vanden Plas and the Austin Ambassador, etc., though, It's one of those things from the 70's/80's that it's nice to see around still... If only to remind you that yes, "styling" really was that bad back then. I bet it's a lot nicer to drive, too, and they were rare, even back then so, if you're going to have an '80's icon, I can't think of a better one, TBH.

Think I would have to LPG it though, interior looks like new! How Mercs used to be built as well, should be solid.

Seen a few youTube videos and maintenance looks very straight forward, their brake sensor setup looks way better.

Unlike a modern car, no depreciation if anything, it could gain value.

When did you last see a Nova SR ? Ten a penny a while ago - I saw one for £4,750 recently.i wish I still had my G reg Nova SR in glacier white - but who'd have thought it then they won't get any left

I think rarity and classic status are pretty similar thing

MGBs are classics but there's loads of them !

To me classic car is one that is sought after and very rare - I get more of a buzz seeing rare cars

Never thought My old Capri 1.6 LS would sell at £200 , now you cant get a decent one for less than a few grand  We went to Basildon and back last week and never seen one Omega in 240 miles .. where are they all 
After 4 omega's ive decided to keep this one and keep it going even though its a pain in the ass repairing sometimes  Maybe it too will be worth £6k+ in the future
