I suspect some underpowered cars and front wheel drive cars might get properly stuck so the authorities have taken a blanket ban approach.

So it seems ..... but it's OK to have 100 HGVs a year get stuck  >:(

The A170 road runs down the bank with a maximum gradient of 1 in 4 (25%), and including a hairpin bend. Vehicles have to keep in low gear whist travelling up or down the bank,[1] and caravans are banned from using the section.

Sounds like a challenge to me. :D 1 in 4 in 5th gear is no problem in the Westfield , as long as the speed doesn't drop below 70 or so. ;D

Just looking elsewhere on the web, & a glide-ist tows his glider up the hill. So it's OK for trailer in general to use the hill, but not a caravan - which is also a trailer  ???

Well you can always use this as your defence when you wind up in front of a beak wearing a freshly made omlette on your bonce... ::)

Maybe it's a sidewind/side-profile issue?

I'm merely pointing out the inconsistency of either an all encompassing 'no trailers' up/down the hill or as highlighted above, 'no caravans'

Well, they do launch gliders from the top... and they often have to land at the bottom. ::)

As mentioned, a glider trailer doesn't have anything like the wind loading of a caravan, but they are typically much longer. They have a good reason to be there, though, and don't tend to be "once a year" towing types.

IMO they should ban HGV`s too, it`s painful being stuck behind them going up there, as it would be with caravans too if they were allowed LOL

Been up there plenty of times over the years in various vehicles with no real problem but I wouldn't try it with the van tbh.
Your Merc wouldn't have any problems pulling the van up there but if you had a mechanical problem then your totally breaked because you have no space to get off the road.

Google it for a video and you will see what I mean  ;)

As Jason said, they probably brought in a blanket ban due to dickheads trying to pull stuff up there in vehicles not suitable for the job  ;)

Where are you going Andy and from which direction ?
