Can't say i've ever used a dealer to read codes, just buy the dealer diags, or as a minimum use a generic OBDII app and a bluetooth OBDII dongle.

Understandable to use a dealer if you don't understand / have access too the diags though, but at that price it would have paid for itself in most cases.

Yeah, but if you need the dealer to do the work, they won't accept your diagnosis.

They read the codes whether you ask them to or not. They have to otherwise everyone could turn around and blame them if it came back.

The total con, as Alf Garnet calls it, is that the starting point of fixing a fault code seems to be 'Replace the sensor' rather than to diagnose the live data.

Not unreasonable as diagnosis takes time and equipment. They make their profit changing oil... It takes longer for the customer interaction than the actual job.
