If they did that, I'd still be driving my Cossie 24v............... ;D ;D ;D ;D  I've got enough to contend with, with the robot droid on Traffic Master, Terry Wogan on the radio, Fran Bloody Godfrey on the sat nav and my darling wife...

Guys,
I took the liberty of contacting someone at Carin, please read the cut n' pasted e-mail and response...  Not much use me thinks, Thanks to Joseff anyway..

Hi
The operating software is very limited for updates for Vauxhall, but the mapping disc is readily available, current is 2006/07 uk map, partial postcode as it is the later units with full postcode search.
all non C-IQ mapping discs will work with all Philips Carin and Siemens VDO navigation.
go to our web site for details
regards
Joe Kenyon
www.carin.co.uk and go to maps

The people you need to speak to is a company called VDO Dayton who purchased the Carin (Car Information and Navigation) satellite navigation business from Philips. The Dutch company wilted under the heat from the rival Blaupunkt TravelPilot System some years ago now and decided dispose of the business in order to take the money and run.  It looks like a smart auto electrical business has managed to acquire the defunct domain name. If you speak to VDO they will tell you that the early Carin systems should now be regarded as absolute and are not powerful enough to run the latest discs (they of course just about can but rather slowly for routing etc). They will kindly in exchange for your credit card number offer to put you in touch with one of their dealers for the installation of one of their latest systems. Interestingly Philips recently abandoned its plans to re-enter the stand alone Sat Nav device business stating the market was too saturated. The early Carin systems only do partial post code searches even with the latest version 2.3 GM firmware.

heres the response i just got from carin
Hi
there is only partial postcode search on your system and with the later mapping disc, it's only on the latest nav systems that full postcode search feature is available, by putting in say WF15 6 then the street name allows only the street within that postcode, as in Birmingham there is 14 Green Lane's, so by typing in the first part of the postcode gives you the correct Green Lane.
for maps go to our web page

ALSO i just put in the latest 2007 disc in and its let me do a partial post code search also it has a lot better response regards junctions , all in all i am satisfied now with the results, i dont think we would benefit anything updating to the 2.3 as mentioned.
UNLESS someone knows different ?

Sitting on a dusty shelf in the back office of your friendly (but expensive) Vauxhall dealer somewhere there may be a Carin firmware upgrade disc. I found one quite by accident (at WJ King Welling South East London) the parts department staff thought it was a mapping disc. They were not sure what it was and said try and see if it’s any good. Upon insertion it immediately entered a setup routine much to their (and my) horror. It however completed OK and I had a free firmware upgrade to version 2.3. This is the latest version of the firmware for the GM Carin system. There is firmware version 2.9 also available for Carin but this is for the retail systems only. The GM Opel firmware was unique and the retail software as several of our EU German cousins have found doesn’t work properly albeit that it will install (apparently it stops speaking and causes crashes). If anyone speaks German there is still quite a lot of info available on the net. Because GM switched to an alternative system in 1999/2000 no further GM firmware upgrades were completed beyond 2.3 although Philips continued to develop the retail firmware version.
