Title: POWDER COATING SPORT STAR RIMS
Post by: MikeDundee on 21 April 2020, 06:57:09
So went up to MadHouse tyres yesterday assuming was going to leave the car with them for 2 days to have the rims powder coated, told me they could not do them because of the fancy screws and when they take them off they sometimes break etc., etc., wait to see the boss when he comes in tomorrow. I advised him they screws were steel and if was such a big issue just powder coat over them, anyway will call them this morning to check what they say. As far as I am concerned they can powder coat over without taking them out if such a big deal.  was going to have a go taking them out myself, but there are a total of 60, 15 per rim, and if one broke off then would be fubarred, so in discussion with my mate in Dundee we both agreed would be best to just leave them in a coat over. I welcome comments on the executive decision that has been made.

If surely the threads in the aluminium alloys are more likely to fail first? In which case you'd need to helicoil them ? Maybe, probably.

Try Jepsons in Gillingham.Mike...They are the best people for wheel refurbs in the South East... although doudt they are working due to the current situation.

Do you mean Lepsons amba?

Have you used them before? How does the process work? Do you leave the car with them, or wheels only? Never had wheels refurbished before but now I have a car with mint wheels, it does make a big difference to the overall look of the car so any car I buy now will get wheels done

It's possible, if not ideal, to superglue any snapped 'bolts' back in place once the wheels have been repaired.

If you remove them before handing the wheels over, then everyone is on the same page :y

Are the screws cosmetic or are they actually split rims ?

Purely cosmetic on the Sportstars :y

Nothing to worry about then. Strip the threads or wring them off to your hearts content. Araldite or similar them back in again.
Or leave in place and powder coat the lot as long as the and result looks ok.

When I've had Motorbike frames Powder Coated I've had to plug the threaded parts of the frame so that the bolts will go back in.  :)

Had this myself, so removed the screws myself, no drama.  No sure if I was lucky or not.

Most will charge a bit more if you want to leave your car with them. From their point of view you are:
1. Taking up valuable parking (although some people have no choice as they haven't got the facility or ability to get their car on 4 axle stands, 4 spare wheels etc.
2. They've got to jack up your car, remove all 4 wheels, which takes time and space.

When I had mine powder coated, the cheapest option was to turn up with just the bare wheels. As I have no facility to remove tyres at home I had to pay slightly more to have the tyres removed and then balanced on refit. This suited me so I just dropped off my wheels with tyres fitted.
They are acid dipped, stripped, and then coated to a colour of your choice. Bear in mind that any repairs are usually extra, so that needs discussing beforehand.  :y
As a guide, add a tenner per wheel if they've got to remove the tyre and refit and balance, add another tenner per wheel if they've got to take the wheel off your car. If they have large premises it may just be a fixed price.  :y

They view it as "He's got a flash expensive  motor so he's loaded", whereas we view it as "I saved hard for that expensive motor but now I'm skint".  ;D

Opps yes Lepsons sorry silly text buttons
I have used them several times in the past with good results

Either take bare wheels in which is cheapest option or just wheels with tyres fitted which is a slightly higher price due to them needing to remove/refit tyres .

Most expensive is to leave car and collect few days later all done .

I remember taking an irmscher set off old pre facelift in a good few years ago now .2 were well buckled and all were really shabby .3 days later all straight and true and fully diamond cut and looking great so they get my thumbs up albeit at a price !!

And. obviously, having a Jag, I must have paid for it by slightly dubious means ;D

Well dropped the car off yesterday morning, should be back Friday as no rush, not like I have anywhere to go right now, studs will sprayed  over, total should be £280, good thing is the shop is only a 5/10 minute walk from my house, pretty handy.

Can't argue with that  :y

There's a place in Crawley that does wheel refurbs, price varies according to requirements and wheel size, but for a set of 18"s recently quoted £260-360 depending on how quickly you want it done...

The Wheel Genie (Next to Serek's place) managed to remove them and refit them on the set of Sportstars I have.
