New clutch needed?
« on: 21 January 2010, 13:30:27 »

Hmmm, I have a suspicion that the clutch is on the way in the Omega but I’d like some other opinions. Firstly the clutch is not slipping at all tested using 5th going up a hill etc. When the car is cold (and the very first start of the day) it is hard to engage 1st or reverse, but if you drop it into third first, then you can use them without issues. However once the car is warm then it is fine. Literally silky smooth. The car is a 2.6 manual. For clarity I have not been driving it in the snow nor am I the type to ride the clutch down the road :)

Any ideas or is the clutch a likely culprit? I will pay attention when I go home this evening but I bet that it will be fine.

This is clutch drag caused by the clutch plate sticking to the flywheel or cover plate.
You can try bleeding the clutch but I suspect it wont make any difference.
Have you had any coolant leaks at the back of the engine? This can get into the clutch and can cause problems but it wears off over time.
I am having similar problems at present and have put it down to the damp weather and no long journeys to get everything fully warm and dried out.
Roll on summer.

I was wondering if it was just moaning due to being cold/damp. No coolant loss at all. I am doing about 700m (50m commute and 2*220mile journeys) a week sitting mostly on the motorway so it should get nicely warmed up :D (Certainly doing the mileage has transformed how well it runs). On the mornings it is only like this for the first few miles and does ease off.

Keep an eye on it, it could just be damp as I said, if it starts to judder then oil contamination from the crank main seal, gearbox or clutch slave becomes a possibility.
Clutch plate should last over 100k unless abused.
Not the sort of thing you take apart to check...just replace it if it eventually dies.
