« on: 31 March 2007, 21:27:13 »

Browsing eBay I came across this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JAGUAR-XJR-SUPERCHARGED-V8-BLACK-FSH-OUTSTANDING-LUXURY_W0QQitemZ330099609590QQcategoryZ18185QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Great ad, lots of nice pictures  :D

I really, really like that...... sooo fast for the money and looks that good!  :D

Been browsing loads of forums and they seam to be fairly reliable.... they have been making them since the early 90's and the last ones of the old shape (1998-2002) seam to be good. I think they got a facelift around 2000 ish....

Seriously tempted by one of these when i start working again, will only have a 20 mile daily commute by car  :) :)

Thats what i thought, considering its performance...(0-60 in 5.2) suspect it may be quicker than that cause factory figures are a little over...

Some say they are old mans car but i think it looks good  :)

5.3 or a 6.0 V12  :D

I always fancied one years ago....but never got one  :(

I have always liked Saloons.... i prefer the XJR to the XKR...

I was simply amazed browsing XJ's... 15/20k gets you one of the new Aluminium XJR's. But i personally prefer the older style interiors 1998-2003  type ones

I drove a TWR tuned manual 6.0 V12 XJS a few years ago. Boy did it pull! Probably not that fast on paper but there was power everywhere in the rev range and it was delivered without any fuss whatsoever. Seriously smooth engine, considering it had been tuned. Tachometer required to see when you'd successfully started it!

Had a block of concrete bolted under the boot floor to compensate for the (rather lovely) boat anchor up front!

Would have been a pig to run, though. Single figure MPGs when pressing on, mid teens when pootling. It had a good bit of gearbox whine too.

Oh and i nearly forgot....if you think changing the plugs on a omega v6 is a PITA job.....try it on the jag v12  ;D ....iirc the two back plugs are buried....and it takes about 2 hours of dismantling stuff to get to them!  ::)

Ive got pictures of when I did mine. They reckon when you take it to a main dealer they leave the rear ones as you have to take the inlet manifolds off to get at them :o

I have just got one of the last rare non supercharged Jaguar Sport XJR from 94.  Gooooood cars, the XJ300 XJR with supercharger 94 onward are truly amazing.  However the one I have also has professionally installed and discrete LPG.  I was tempted by the Supercharged version, but I am hopefully picking up an 1984 V12 series 3 XJ6 next week, I have been trying to find a good one for some time.

I heard the 4.0's were actually better on fuel than the 3.2's cause it was a newer engine?

Whats parts like on them, are they really as expensive to maintain as people say?

You can find loads of parts for them, they only get expensive to maintain if you consider whispering the name Jaguar Main Dealer!

The XJ40s 3.6 or 4 litre engine is a bullet proof 24 valve straight six, way ahead of the likes of BMW or Merc power plants of the time, they are very strong and don't have Lego toy timing belts.

I think 3.6 is a minimum size for a Jaguar engine, 6L V12, Double Six is to be preferred.  Once things moved on to Ford V8 engines, it gets a bit boring for me.

If i get one.... personally I would have to have the 4.0 Supercharged V8. I would not have 3/4 of an engine then  ;) :D Everyone else would be missing 2 cylinders  ;) ;D ;D

People say Omega's are expensive to run (and if taken to a main dealer they are)

So since i have started doing my own work, and when I get a job. Verrrrryyy tempted  :)

Plus i assume there is a trade type club status clubs you can join to get cheap parts?

Check flea bay, loads of stuff usually listed.

Warning, once infected by the Jag Virus, no none cure!

Get the Supercharged cat.  However you will need to invade a small middle east state to ensure a supply of fuel for the hungry pussy cat with supercharger:)  You can then  slay EVOs, Imprezas and such while lounging in a great leather arm chair with no road or engine noise:) Even the real fast EVO variants will disappear in your rear view mirror as you hit 100 (on the autobahn).

I do really want a supercharged cat, next door has a Boxster and there are several other cars I want to beat  ::)

As you pointed out, its the massive power in comfort i like.

The original one i posted up sold for 7k, my cunning plan is to earn money from Car projects (omega hg's oil coolers and so on) to pay for a big cat  :D

I had a lift in one of the early 4.0 V8 jags once. Made an @rse out of myself by commenting on how smooth V12s are. When he told me what was under the bonnet I was very impressed. Went like the clappers, barely a murmur from the engine bay and felt like it had bags of low down torque. Not sure if it was supercharged or NA.

I belive the early 4.0's were actually straight 6's? not sure  :-/

I know around 97/98 they switched to the 4.0 v8's...

That would be about right. It was certainly the V8. Much smoother than the straight 6. Like I say, I thought it was a V12.

I have owned both a "H" reg XJ40 and an "N" reg XJ300, both straight sixes and 3.2Litre, have to say to anyone thinking of buying a Jag, you will never be satisfied with any other car again. Since the Jags I have owned a Nissan QX, a Honda Accord, and now the Omega, but I still hanker after the luxury, smooth ride, and effortless power of the Jag.
