MOT fail - break pipes
« on: 22 September 2009, 21:56:26 »

Hi all,
I put the mig through its MOT last week and it failed on the brake pipes being excessively corroded.
Apparently I need to make my new ones up from a reel of new pipe as ready formed ones are not manufactured anymore.
I went into my local motor factors and they do sell it but there are lots of different sizes you can choose between copper and kunifer.
Does anyone know what the correct size/material is and if I will need any other special parts for this job?  :-?
Cheers, Niall

Best way I find is to take the whole pipe in with me or if too long, just take the ends in along with the total length of pipe required.
Material is up to you. Cunifer is a mix of copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) & iron (Fe)

Yeah I might try that. The front to rear pipes are about 7ft long so I'll just take one of the rear trailing arm pipes in. They must be all th same size?

Yeah, mine failed on a front pipe in april. took it in for a qoute and it was astronomical.  :'(
looked at it to do myself and thought bu66er if I am replacing the whole pipe just for 6" corrosion. Bought a draper brake flaring kit and length of pipe, used a union connection and replaced just the last 1ft to the brake cylinder.   ;)
Have an MOT warning on rear pipe for next time, so will do the same.

Use Kunifer for replacement, copper can go hard over time and can split. This is due to using not-so-pure copper for making the brake line tubing.

You will also need the plumbers tools for bending copper pipes.

I think he means this type of thing although I've never had any problems over the years bending brake pipe as long as you don't need a very tight radius. Just becarefull & gentle ...  :y
