General Discussion Area / Cost overrun
« on: 20 July 2019, 08:44:35 »
I see a report has been released stating that the cost of the great white elephant that is HS2 will likely rise by a measly £30bn.When a project is put out to tender and then contracts signed how can costs be allowed to just spiral in this way?

...Doctor Silas Weir Mitchell? He was a Dr. who specialised in neurasthenia in the early 1900s treating patients[mainly women]for this and nervous exhaustion. His treatment consisted mainly of making patients stay in bed not reading/writing/sewing or even sitting up! This was his "Rest Cure"and could last up to two months.More stubborn cases were treated by administering electric shocks while the patient was in a filled bath.In his book Wearand Tear;or,Hints for the Overworked he stated that women "Would do far better if the brain were very lightly tasked" :D Wonder how he'd have got on these days with those views ;D

General Discussion Area / Formel E
« on: 14 July 2019, 08:27:48 »
While waiting for the first WSB race from Laguna Seca last night I watched the Formel E  race from New York. This is the first time I've watched this series and I must say it was very good-certainly better race than any in F1-loads of overtaking[and quite a bit of paint rubbing. From the commentary one of the main concerns was battery temperature.Driving over a very short section of track[and up against the wall in this case]gave the drivers "Attack Mode" which lasts for 4mins and can be used twice per race at a time of the drivers/team choosing.I'll have to watch more of these races[for what's left of this season/next season]to see if they live up to yesterdays race.

General Discussion Area / Updates
« on: 11 July 2019, 17:22:40 »
Whenever windows 10 do an update it comes on the screen not to turn off computer and then starts counting upwards as a % figure of completion. As soon as this reads 30% complete the computer automatically shuts down, then next time I turn it on it resumes the count until 100% is reached. Why doesn't it do it all in one go?

General Discussion Area / Iranian tensions
« on: 11 July 2019, 12:19:30 »
A Royal Navy warship placed herself between a British tanker and some Iranian gunboats in the Gulf of Hormuz[reportedly training her guns on them but not firing]This it seems is an attempt by the Iranians to seize the tanker in retaliation for our"Piracy" when Marines boarded and seized an Iranian tanker off the coast of Gibraltar which was suspected of breaching EU sanctions.

Omega General Help / Belt squeal
« on: 11 July 2019, 12:09:50 »
The last time I tried starting the car[last week]it had been stood a while,as soon as it started there was a loud squeal[as you'd get from a slipping fan belt]but I had to leave it alone at that time and just turned the car off straight away.Today I've been to the garage to investigate possible causes-and also found I'd only closed the boot lid down without shutting it properly so the battery had gone flat :-[ Took off the auxiliary belt to check if any of the pulleys were stiff/seized,the belt did seem "stuck" to a couple of the pulleys[took no effort to "unstick" them though[but could be a cause of the squeal]is there anything I can put on the belt/pulleys to stop this as it's not a problem I've ever come across before?Rotating the pulleys by hand showed no stiffness/roughness,but rocking the pulleys up/down and side to side produced a noticeable amount of movement on the aircon pulley and an audible knock when it was moved,so presumably a bearing or something is shot?Is it thought this could produce the squeal? As the aircon doesn't work and never has while I've owned it I'm minded to but a non-aircon belt for it to bypass the aircon pulley, but will delay for others opinions ideas on the squeal.

Omega General Help / Issue?
« on: 06 July 2019, 18:04:19 »
Last year a new radiator and new thermoswitches were installed on my Elite.Earlier this year I finally got round to fitting a new thermostat[to replace the lazy one it had from the day I bought it]and a new temperature sender unit and coolant temperature sender.Since fitting these latter parts the temperature gauge has got up to an indicated 90 then dropped back to 85 before back to 90 and back down again and repeating this process 2 or 3 times before finally settling at 90 at which point the rear fan and the nearside front fan would kick in and continue to run until some seconds after the engine was switched off.I'm sure that before the thermostat etc. swap the fans would kick in and lower  the temp enough to switch themselves off while the engine was still running and then kick in again if the temp rose again. Both my Volvos certainly operate in this manner as have all the other cars I've worked closely with.To this end today I've fitted yet another new thermostat, temperature sender and coolant temp sensor. If this doesn't alter anything could it be one or both of the radiator thermoswitches is duff?Which thermoswitch controls which fan?Or could there be another problem I've not thought of?

General Car Chat / Emergency services show
« on: 22 June 2019, 18:27:47 »
Been out today to one of the above shows at Sandtoft aerodrome[near Doncaster]various "classic" police cars were on display-a couple of Crown Victorias a couple of Dodge Chargers and an Explorer type SUV In amongst these were a liveried Senator B[surely one of the last of the line?]reg M859 AWS and a black 3.2 Omega-which apparently had been on road wars and had some sort of tie in with the Grand Theft Auto computer game reg on that one was OV03 LJL.

General Discussion Area / Blame and denial
« on: 13 June 2019, 12:59:22 »
It has been reported that two oil tankers are on fire in the Gulf of Oman, the suspicion is that they were hit by torpedoes :o Tehran have said the tankers were carrying Japan[who are still exporting oil to Iran despite American sanctions]related cargo.Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause but no doubt fingers will be pointed and denials made, but who knows where this could lead.

General Car Chat / The Saga continues
« on: 08 June 2019, 14:49:50 »
So the step daughter finally got her Meriva back on Thursday and rightly used it yesterday for her work commute, had a text from her today to say that on her way home the temp gauge got to 70 before dropping back to its lowest point[which she tells me is 50]and staying there it threw a code which she tells me was code 4 which apparently means the aircon was off.Today so far it's behaved normally[although still only registering a high of 70 on the gauge where before it used to run at about 90] and she's going to try a bit of a run in it tomorrow to see how it behaves. In fairness she's been in touch with the seller and he's offered to pick the car up on Monday to check it over/fix it[again :D]and leave her a "courtesy car" while he does so.Whilst she seems reluctant for this to happen I've advised her that if she cannot reject the car totally then she should get him to sort it out properly as if she lets it ride now she's potentially storing up problems in the[probably]near future.

General Discussion Area / What adhesive?
« on: 29 May 2019, 19:02:29 »
I've made model kits[Airfix etc] from a very young age,but about 5yrs ago decided to go out of my comfort zone and build a model of H.M.S. Victory out of wood.I'm getting near now to the stage where I have to think about the rigging of it which I figure to take the strain of tightening the lines will need metal fittings. The question is what would be the best type of adhesive to use to "glue" these fittings into the wood?

General Car Chat / Evoque or not?
« on: 29 May 2019, 07:58:33 »
In town yesterday I saw an Evoque parked at the roadside....or did I? The car in question had no Range Rover/Land Rover badging on front, rear or wheel centres[o/s at least,I didn,t see n/s] nor did it say Evoque on the tailgate. What it did have both on the front of the bonnet and on the tailgate below the rear window was  LUMMA CL R RS all the lettering was in black apart from the S which was in red.So was it an Evoque which the owner had de-badged and their own lettering applied,a special edition type thing[such as you can get Range Rovers badged Overfinch]or some kind of clone/other?
