General Car Chat / MOT question
« on: 01 November 2018, 11:09:36 »
The Omegas M.o.T. is due this month, while it's not covered many miles since last year so I'm reasonably confident about it there is one issue it has that I'm unsure of.More often than not the speedo and rev counter don't work but everything else-fuel and temp gauges, warning lights and mileometer[including trip meter]-continues to work as they should.Question is if the speedo/rev counter don't work at the time of the test is this a fail?Tried re-seating dash to no avail, maybe spray connections with contact cleaner and see if that works?

Got home to find a card from British Gas to say they'd called to read the meter and if I wanted to give them such a reading to phone them.So that's what I did and got the usual automated answering affair.First thing enter customer reference number nope not recognized try again,so I did and still not recognized.Enter phone number attached to account and didn't recognize that either ???Next came say what else I wanted to do so I said talk to a real person and it came back with enter customer reference number which it doesn't recognize >:( >:(

General Discussion Area / Missing journalist
« on: 14 October 2018, 08:12:46 »
A journalist for the Washington Post has reportedly not been seen or heard from since entering the Saudi embassy in Turkey over a week ago. Some sources say they have proof that the Saudis executed him, while the Saudis say they have proof he left the embassy safe and well and they have done nothing to him and no clue as to his whereabouts.Britain and the USA are now talking of boycotting a big trade meeting in Saudi Arabia over this issue although Trump says this will not impact on the huge arms trade deal the USA has signed with them. :-X

General Discussion Area / Space station
« on: 14 October 2018, 07:59:54 »
It seems plans are afoot for the UK to have its own space station.Favoured location is in the north of Scotland and could see us launching small satellites-we are world leaders in the development and construction of these-as early as 2020.The location is favoured for its access to the polar orbits that are the principal aim for these satellites. It is reported that such a facility could bring in trillions to the economy.

Saw on the front of one of the TV listings magazines"Will  Kim Tate survive fatal fall?" Surely if it's a fatal fall she can't survive otherwise it wouldn't be fatal?Or has my understanding of English deteriorated so much?

Omega General Help / Temp gauge/fans
« on: 06 October 2018, 18:04:03 »
Having fitted a new radiator plus thermoswitches and a new oil cooler it was evident something else was wrong as the temp gauge would climb to an indicated 90 at which point the fans[all 3]would kick in and drop the indicated temp to about 75 before shutting off when the cycle would repeat. So to this end I've fitted a new thermostat, coolant temperature sensor and temperature sender.Just been to bleed cooling system[I'd run out of anti-freeze and the battery was flat before]Gauge now climbs to an indicated 95 at which point the fans[again all 3] kick in and lower the indicated temperature to about 92/3 where the gauge holds steady and resolutely refuses to go any lower and the fans won't shut down-this is the same with expansion tank cap on or off.Top hose gets hot bottom hose stays cool, the pipe that runs across the radiator[from just above where the gearbox oil cooler pipes fit]gets hot.The pipe that runs to the front of the expansion tank gets hot and the smaller pipe from expansion tank to throttle body[?] stays cool.Heater blows hot[heater set on ECO,fan on slowest speed and temperature set to high]This is all with the parked and ticking over in the garage so could change when there's airflow through the radiator from it being driven.Basically it's just the fans not cooling things enough to shut off that's worrying me.Turn the engine off and the fans continue to run for a few seconds still cooling things before turning themselves off.Apologies for lengthy post, but what's the collective wisdom?Ok to run as is or have I done something wrong when changing the thermostat/temp sender/cts?

General Car Chat / Record Attempt
« on: 01 October 2018, 21:02:02 »
Next year on 31st March the Volvo Owners Club along with others are making a world record attempt at Bruntingthorpe.Their aim is to get 600 Volvos all rolling within a measured mile. The present record was set in Poland at circa 570 cars[can't recall the exact number]the Americans are also going with the possibility of making a record attempt but as yet no venue/date has been set for this.If I still have the V70 next march I'll certainly be taking part in the British attempt.

General Discussion Area / Can't be my end can it?
« on: 24 September 2018, 20:57:37 »
Just of late-since the last update thing windows 10 do-when I click on a topic/section/another page it sometimes comes up in top left corner of screen "waiting for response" and then after a few seconds the screen will just go blank other times there'll be a short delay before the page appears. This doesn't happen on other forums/e bay/other sites so I don't think it can be a problem at my end,but if not what's causing it?

General Car Chat / Two Mercs
« on: 24 September 2018, 20:39:28 »
Been in a 64 plate SLK-not far so couldn't really judge on its comfort/handling-not keen on styling of these with long nose and dumpy rear end,but the dash I liked a lot it was uncluttered with instruments clear and easily read. Then I went in a later model C200-again not far-the styling was more pleasing to me but the dash appeared cluttered and less clear than the earlier car and had one of those gormless screen things stuck on top of dash like a chav special afterthought so that alone would put me off having one.If manufacturers must fit these screens why can't they integrate them into the dash design? >:(

General Discussion Area / Endeavour found?
« on: 19 September 2018, 18:49:49 »
A team of Australians believe they have found the remains of captain Cooks ship Endeavour although they admit further checks/tests are necessary to confirm this.Something of an ignominious end[albeit renamed Lord Sandwich2]for such a famous ship.At the end she was used as a prison ship during the American war of independence and was scuttled off Newport U.S.A. along with a dozen other ships. In the grand scheme of things it makes no real difference if is her or not,but I think it's always good[and historically interesting]to be able to pinpoint something like this.

General Discussion Area / Finally ending
« on: 14 September 2018, 21:55:34 »
I see that VW are at last finally ending production of the Beetle[the proper one not the modern thing]the final "celebration" cars will be made next year love them/hate them, good cars/bad cars it matters not it is still one of the most iconic cars ever produced-some say at the instigation of Hitler-and in some ways laid the ground work for that other iconic car the Porsche 911.VW say they're ending production to concentrate more resources on hybrid/fully electric vehicles.

General Discussion Area / Is two enough?
« on: 10 September 2018, 07:59:30 »
In yesterdays Moto2 race Romano Fenati grabbed a rivals front brake lever while they were doing about 125mph.Luckily the other rider managed to stay on the bike and not crash out.Fenati was black flagged and after reviewing the footage the governing body have given Fenati a 2 race ban.For such dangerous behaviour in an already dangerous sport is a 2 race ban enough?

General Car Chat / Some rental car
« on: 08 September 2018, 19:41:02 »
Woman who lives opposite me has an 8yr old Audi TT which at the beginning of the week was hit by an errant Suzuki driver whilst it was parked at the roadside. The Audi took the hit on the rear o/s bumper, the quarter panel.drivers door[oddly missing the door mirror]and front wing. Both o/s alloys were gouged and it was hit hard enough to shove it into the kerb damaging both n/s alloys. It also looks like the rear axle/suspension is bent.Anyway the Audi's owner has been to pick up a courtesy/rental car while insurance is sorted out,she was told they'd give her a 3 series BMW but when she went to fetch it was told she couldn't have that as it had been returned with various faults and needed new tyres too :o.However they said they'd let her have a Mercedes instead-which they have-and now she's running about in an 18 plate Mercedes S class 350d :D
