Can it be driven?
« on: 11 August 2021, 17:54:28 »

I've never owned a diesel so not paid any real attention to them, but a mate is thinking of buying one[it's cheap] only trouble is it's a goodly distance away and has a blown intercooler so the question is can it be driven any kind of distance in this state without damaging other things[like the turbo]or wrecking itself?

It won't make any boost, so will be slower than an old automatic Mercedes 200D :D

Possibly blown an intercooler pipe, which suggests too much boost pressure which begs the question as to why :-\

No, as the turbo will be trying to fill the whole world with boost as it over speeds it’s way to certain destruction.

Depending on what car it is it shouldn’t be too hard to change where it is, or failing that if you can get to the hoses and disconnect the intercooler you could then just fit an ordinary piece of same diameter pipe in its place and fetch it home at a moderate pace👍

he tells me it's an early 2000's Volvo V70 2.4 diesel[he likes my petrol V70 but he's not having that] with just over 200,000 miles on it.Think he might be better spending a little more for a better example.

If he’s been driving it around with such a big boost leak there is a very big chance that the turbo is now fkd or very close to its demise

It's done 230k miles, and doesn't look like its ever been washed. I would also wager that the supplied 'new' intercooler is a used one that's had a hose run through it :-X

It's in Southport. You could save alot of energy by not going there in the first place  :D
