More wishbones..
« on: 02 April 2020, 20:00:58 »

My plan is to get the bones replaced, switch front bushes for polys, keep rear bushes stock and replace.
Now I remember years ago telling a mechanic I wanted the Gm wishbones kept and new bushes pressed in, but he wouldn't have it and said it didn't matter. I don't know which brand he used in the end.

My question is, which wishbones should I buy? Im worried about possible snapping with front polys in use.

Mileage low, but driven with spirit shall we say. Nothing too hard.

It really, really doesn't matter!

If you're doing this as a hobby, then removing the old, hopefully GM, wishbones to clean, rebush/joint and then repaint is might be worth considering. If you're paying for this job, new ones are the only way to go.

Having done several front end rebuilds, I don't consider there's enough difference between GM and pattern parts to waste any time on the old ones. That's particularly true of the balljoints, as the solid rivets of the original is a better fixing than bolting on replacements.

You definitely want the poly bushes!

Some wishbones, including the much praised by a vocal few on here ATP shite have poor welds and shite bushes and balljoints.  I'd start with a better wishbone.

I prefer to stick to GM myself, as I know that the rear bushes are easily obtained and guaranteed to fit, and the balljoints are very durable. But to buy new, they are horrific.  I'd be happy with 2nd hand, as long as the balljoints were fine. In fact my current ones are 2nd hand - they previously done 130k on my previous Omega ;)

Fairly certain Lemforder take same sized rear bushes, but double check.

Not sure I'd consider anything else, its false economy.

Yep, used GM are the best option. Even if the ball joints aren't good the rivets can be drilled out and ball joints replaced easily enough.
