Omega General Help / Re: 2.5 td starting woes

Hmm have you checked the diesel heater to filter joint? it often undoes when people change the filter they dont realise it and you get starting problems till it pumps the diesel up!
fix? remove filter and tighten heater bit by hand its on a screw thread above the filter then replace filter hand tight als :yo

I haven't taken it apart and reassembled but having said that, it's bone dry around the filter/fuel heater (I wondered what the wiring plug was for) and doesn't smell of diesel, whereas the injector pump is wet Underneath and smells of diesel.

I have poured water over the filter/heater/housing then moved the car to look for a diesel-like shimmer in the water on the floor and it all seems good.

Having even a full tank doesn't seem to make a lot of difference  :-\

I've also clocked on to listening to the lift pump.. Seems to pump for about ten seconds. If I do the ignition off then on again a couple of times to let the pump prime the system it starts absolutely splendid  :D

Don't know if it's had veg oil in it ever, but I intend to ASAP  :D

Leak off pipes are all good, I replaced them last week :y

And totally.. I really don't want to have either pump off if I can help it!

I noticed that when I took the bleed screw out of the filter head, it wasn't entirely full. It was an inch or so below the bleed hole. That says to me the fuel in there's going somewhere when you switch it off. I don't think the leak at the injector pump is bad because I haven't noticed any puddles on the drive, I'd expect diesel would be easy to spot, especially with all the rain at the moment! So it must be going back into the tank from where the minor leak is preventing any vacuum effect holding the fuel in the system. So I'm thinking if I put a non rerun valve inline immediately after the lift pump (for easy access) this should help my problem?

Omega General Help / 2.5 td starting woes

Ok so I've been playing about trying to get this figured out. Mines got the usual starting troubles. Crank crank crank x1million before it runs. Be it hot or cold. Sometimes it'll fire up on all 6, sometimes it'll run on like 3 or 4 for a few seconds before it sounds like a 6pot.

I haven't had the lift pump out to clean yet but I'm pretty sure I'd be clutching at straws as when you remove the bleed screw on the filter head it spews out a good'un.

I have a leaky injector pump by the look of it. It's wet down between the block and the fuel pump. And it smells. It's not leaking from the injectors and running down, and I can't find any fresh diesel when I feel round the end of the pipes and around the injector pump as best I can get my fingers round.

So to me, the obvious conclusion is the i.pump has to come out and swap. Or at least looked at for an internal leak? Sound right? Could this be the cause of my problem?

Are they easy enough once the inlets removed? Does the pump come out independently to the timing chain pulley/sprocket (terminology people, sorry) meaning I don't have to touch the timing chain? I've never touched an injector pump before or a timing chain.. The latter I'm a bit frightened in my inexperience of!

ive just brought a carbon pollen filter for mine... Think it was about £12 from ECP  :y ok it's for my Astra but it looks like it might just be the same size... I'll trial fit it in the omega just to find out I think!

I feel a bit of a plonker... I posted saying that the loom coming in from the tow bar was catching water off the rear wheel.. When I went to silicone it /tape it up, it pulled out in my hand.. It was at that point that I realised it was actually a drain tube from (I'm guessing) the sunroof? D'uuuuhhhhh!!  ::)
Wow , water pump had a rough time  :o Hope you found all the bits  :)
nah, BMW shite, they all go like that.

Good old german engineering I thought! :D

While I'm here, I've just discovered my fuel pump isn't coming on, and haven't yet found evidence of power at the wiring plug. Which relay/fuse needs checking?

The engine does let go quite spectacularly if pushed too much...  ...possibly due to oilways prone to clogging.

The chip guy I used to chip my tractor used to do chips for £70 delivered, though think a lot cheaper now. He himself had a TD manual with 427 ECU that went well, one of the quickest I've driven. Omegatoy has a quick tractor as well, chipped, intercooler fan manually controlled, and we played with the wastegate one day (using tech1 to keep an eye on boost and temps), can't remember if that's a 214 or 427 ECU though...  ...Omegatoy?

The one on eBay at the moment for around the £40 mark looks like the same company name as whats printed on the label on my old chip.. Think I'll go with one of those as the gains impressed me with the last one  :y

You can get around 185 bhp from the BM 2.5TDS's through remapping, and just under 200 Bhp with more tweaking with Turbo size and boost pressure but they don't last very long.  ::)

Longevity isn't a concern.. Not much of one anyway. I have a spare engine just incase.  :y I'd happily push it to within an inch of its life  ;D

My first td saloon was damn quick for what it was, I swear that was more than just chipped! Used to light the tyres so easy it wasn't fun to drive in the wet in a hurry, and saw me get pulled by s copper one night who claimed he was doing 140 "and still didn't catch you up"  :-X
Bear in mind the 2.5TDS had a few more horses than the standard BM 2.5TD lumb, and the latter had more than the Omega flavoured, so a fair way to go to get the Omega up to them kind of figures.

Longevity, hmm, depends of your own definitions really, we use to Track them (325's) and they rarely used to make it to the final lap, a stupidly short lived weekend hobby if Im honest.

Umm.. ok maybe I am concerned about longevity, would like to get at least a few weeks out of it haha ;D

Nah they're floating around in the head somewhere! New pumps metal so it'll smash the bits up, just hope they don't block up somewhere important  :(

I have seen 230bhp quoted for the off road boys in the Range Rover from a reputable company. This does of course mean extensive mods and lots of money, would be good fun though!!!

Sounds tempting... But the less I spend on the car the better. Although if one comes up for scrap money with a decent lump...  ;D :D

Well I thought I'd write a quick post about the car so far, basically I brought the car on the assumption that the head gasket had failed. A cheap fix I thought, as I have a spare td lump sat in my old estate that's been sat for near on four years.

Dispite my best efforts to make sure the engine was well and truly dead by attempting to force the car by its own means for the 24 mile journey back to mine (which epically ended up with me sat with a dead battery from restarts at the nearest BP awaiting AA recovery towards midnight), a quick once over back at mine confirmed nothing more serious than a somewhat broken water pump.

Lucky I got a recent one in the old car, hoorah!! (Pictured in the background)

The car was terrible to drive. It would tug and pull all over the place, especially upon braking. It was like the wheels were flaring out and not pulling back in again until the lie of the road pulled it straight again! A quick inspection underneatth highlighted some slight deteriation in a steering balljoint, and a pair of suspect looking wishbones. There was also a binding brake slider on the front offside wheel. Que. Old estate again to donate two less knackered wishbones and a brake calliper slider rubber boot.

Turned out the bushes in the wishbones were well and truly shot(in case you couldn't tell haha, as changing these nearly completely corrected the car, bar a light element of vagueness.

Last night was an interesting one in the rain. The rear footwell was full of water! A quick check under the scuttle panel revealed a hidden water feature holding nearly as much water as what would be needed to flood a living room, never mind a car! So I poked and prodded with a long bar until it whooshed out with force! I also noticed that where the tow bar wiring loom passes up behind the rear wheel into the inners of the car had a poorly fitting rubber grommet/sleeve that was catching water off the rear wheel and directing it straight into the car.. Hence the wet carpet and a soaked rear bench sponge and sound deadning! Now I'm playing the "dry the car out" game, rear seat currently in the loft!

The car needs tracking, rear brakes looking at due to a non functioning handbrake, two tyres,  a new battery and a starting issue addressing, it's a pig to start most of the time and leaks fuel around the injectors, although I seem to have cured the leaks with some replacement leak-off pipes.

...that and it needs chipping haha!

The car was intended to turn around a quick buck from, but I'm starting to like the car... Wether I keep it or not depends how much used chip fat I can get my hands on, because it's competing with the economy of a mapped 1300 diesel Astra...

Yep... Looks that way haha! What other "go faster" things can be done to these? In sure I've read on here you can advance the injector pump a tooth?
