A combination of a bad back and a run of nights stopped play during cambelt change. Started cleaning and reassembling everything a couple of hours ago, but rain has stopped play again.
If I get an hour or two of dry weather tomorrow it should be up and running again - fingers crossed.

Finally got round to putting the engine cover back on the Shaguar :)

Topped up the fluids in the Omega, and topped up the electricity in the Battlebus.

Had the 960 in for M.o.T. on Friday which it failed on handbrake efficiency.Other than that it had a clean sweep not even an advisory.Going to try adjusting first[lever goes to 9 clicks at present, but if it needs new shoes they're only £14+shrapnel per set so not an expensive fix.Not at all bad for a 25yr old car I don't think.

Nope just tried that. Just lifted plenum back off t check O rings seated properly. All looks ok too. Visually checked everything plugged in, connected etc. and all looks ok.
I will have to strip it down again and recheck timing. I have a suspicion its not that though, it looked spot on before the cover went back on. When I was trying to time it up with the wrong backing plate the drivers side cams kept slipping on the belt and turned almost a quarter turn when they did. I suspect one or two valves may have slightly bent. I hope Im wrong. :( :'(
I suppose a compression test is the only way to find out. Will try and get a run out to buy one in the morning.
Back to work for 4 nights tomorrow night, so progress will be slow again. ::)

Well pretty happy with the alignment without any adjustments as yet.

I marked the the adjuster threads with a pen so I could wind the new adjuster up to the markings. This seems to have worked well for the initial setup *

* No pedestrians or oncoming vehicles were dazzled in this experiment  ;D

Prepared and sprayed the Dexta's bottom, its now a shiny Empire Blue like the rest of it.

Just need some new wings and to check the half shaft seals now there is oil in the back axle.

Got a compression tester this morning. Just used it on 135 bank. Figures from front to rear were 150, 170, 180.  Is the 150 a very bad sign or just wear and tear after 188k miles ?  Could it indicate a bent valve for example or would that be likely to give a much lower figure  :-\

P.s. This was with all three plugs removed from that bank, which I hope is the correct procedure.

You should do a compression test with the throttle open, and the engine unable to start. If you're going to do it with the plugs out, remove all of them.

For this sort of diagnosis, the procedure isn't important provided you do the same for each cylinder. I wouldn't base any complicated repair on doing the test once.

Those readings aren't close, but none of them suggest a bent valve.
