Havent yet disproved coil pack or plugs. Im still working on the basis that it only happened after I changed the cambelt, so is likely to be related to that. Bearing in mind that I have checked the cam timing again and found it to be spot on, my current favourite is DG,s theory on the engine wiring loom as that was disturbed during the process.
After that it will be check engine earth, swap coil packs, then....................anyone want to buy a V5 Omega ?  :D
And that is the absolute correct thing to do first  :y

I have had a look at the loom and found the 3mm brown wire that has a smaller brown wire go off to each coil pack.
Stripped the outer insulation away to get at the crimp, and it appears to be fine. even gave the wires a good tug and they seem tight.
Im wondering if its worth running a parallel wire from where the crimp is, round to 135 coil pack just as a test ?
Also, because its easy to get at I decided I would swap number 1 and 2 plugs around.
While I was there, I plugged the compression tester into number 1 again. Throttle wide open, but the other 5 plugs still in place, so maybe not ideal ? It gave a reading of 175psi, so apparently has gained 25psi over the weekend ?
Swapped 1 & 2 plugs around and started the engine. Still running rough.
Codes are now random misfire. Cylinder 1 misfire. And cylinder 3 misfire.
A few days ago I just has cylinder 1 misfire.  ??? :-\
Why didnt I do what a lot of other people do and just play cambelt roulette ?  ::)

coil pack. Take a good look at the connections in its plug. Use a magnifying glass.

Well,I cant find anything related to what I did when changing the cambelt. Will have a look at the plug connections as you suggest, then I think I will swap coil packs over and see if the codes move to the other bank.

Just swapped coil packs over and the codes have moved to the 246 bank. So 135 coil pack must be fubar.
I still cant understand how it has decided to give up the ghost while I was changing the cambelt, but the evidence seems conclusive.
Just need to source the best priced Bosch coil pack now.

Ive "fixed" all the more difficult stuff trying to diagnose it though.  ;D

One of the things that has stuck in my mind from all the years on OOF, is Fuse 19 often saying, dont jump in, throwing parts at a problem, and making all kinds of wild assumptions when diagnosing. If you have a problem after recent work, then start there and retrace your steps, as it probably isnt a coincidence.
This has served me very well over the last 10 years or so, but it appears that this one has been the exception to the rule.

Yup. Apart from engine / box / diff, there arent many things that havent been replaced in the last 4 years.
Ive spent around £2500 on it, which in one sense is daft on an old high mileage car. On the other hand, what else could I have bought that would have been as nice to drive, and would have cost less to run in that time ?
I dont regret a penny of it today, although I might have done yesterday.  ;D

My 1/3/5 coil pack did the exact same thing several years ago after car had been parked up for a few days, hence my earlier suggestion .

Hope you have now got to the bottom of the issues and a new pack will cure the rough running  :y

Bosch genuine were around £70 a side from memory ...although there are some fakes sold as Bosch

Replaced the 246 coil just after I bought the car. The 135 one looks to be the original, so its done well.
Just the fact it apparently packed up when the cambelt was done has cost me a lot of aggravation.  ::)
Thanks for the suggestion Amba. It turned out to be spot on.
If I still have your address I will send you a cigar.  :y ;D

Just bought the last one from Autovaux ebay shop. £79.99.  :y

I probably spent £1500 on mine in nine years!

That includes six tyres, two cambelts, complete suspension&steering rebuild, radiator, two rear wheelbearings and ordinary servicing.....
