URGENT - starter motor location on 2.2 diesel
« on: 27 June 2008, 19:23:25 »

Have taken off the cover thing under the engine and am looking for the starter motor. Not in usual place and can't see it anywhere else.

It is the 2.2 DTI engine.

Please help! Need info quickly.

Want to check earthing points / connections due to unreliable starting.

Thanks!

Not so easy to get at.

If you look at the rear left side of the engine below the turbo charger you will see a metal heatshield with three bolts holding it on....its behnd that.

Remember though that the starter 0V chassis connection is via the engine block!

Thanks.

So, if I have a starting problem that seems like no power is getting to the starter, it's the engine block connection I need to check?

Can you tell me its whereabouts?

It's only really started doing this since I changed the fuel filter.

No, the first place to check is the low current supply (small wire) to the starter....

Does the starter make ANY noise at all when you turn the key?

When you get it to start does it turn over fast or slow.

Garage clear out in March 2011 and I will have a large amount of omega parts going very cheap.

The leccy is coming to look at it today as well as some other issues.

What happens is this... but annoyingly it has stopped doing it for a week...

Put key in, turn key and one of three things happens:

(A) It starts like normal, fast start, no trouble
(B) The starter will sound like there's a flat battery, whirr very slowly and after between 2 and 10 seconds will then kick into life and start the car
(C) There will be no sound from the starter and I will have to keep trying the ignition until it either does (A) or (B)

The leccy knows his stuff and suspects starter connections, or possibly a connection in the ignition.

When I changed the fuel filter, some fuel from the old filter obviously dripped down into the engine bay. I wonder if I have got some into the starter connections as this starting problem only seems to have been since then.

Thanks for the comments.

Check your battery connections .. they are known to sometimes corrode/loosen .. this could cause the problem you describe.

On an occasion when the starter is slow and laborious feel the battery terminals .. you may well find one very warm !!  A sure sign of a bad connection !!
