Just remembered - in 2004 they actually fitted all new heads due to concerns at warranty on skimming -

In 2004 I had a coolant leak which they thought was to do with the oil cooler - something in the V of the engine anyway. It ended up with needing cyllinder head gasket - then there was an issue of not being able to skim the heads - it went off to a specialist firm - they were then going to fit old bits back in it - kicked up a stink with VX and ended up with completely rebuilt top end. Of course 4 years later (in 2008) they screwed up the cam belt change and had to put me a brand new engine in all over again

Extract from a thread on Vauxhall  Owners site - all I remember now is that they were talking about a coolant leak related to the oil cooler and it ended up with all new cylinder heads and everything else associated therewith.

"Coolant Leak ....same as mine
I stripped Inlet manifold down to find water on the Oil cooer Sealing plate...porous hole in plate plus leaky seal......replaced cooler and plate complete £95 for items and did job myself....was warned that when undoing original cooler locking nuts the thread will cross....and it did..!!
Any way after building back up and starting up ...leak still present....drips at back of cyl head onto exhaust near downpipe/manifold joint.
Checked hoses and replaced Inlet to head banjo bolt dowty washers with copper washers. Still no joy.
Dealer said not uncommon for this engine cyl heads to leak out......car runs good....no contamination in oil or coolant but heater doesnt get hot in cabin and temp gauge floats from 90-94c alot...never overheats.
Next job to look at.....Cyl headf gasket....as ive exhausted anything else i can think of.
Any help from u guys would be welcome"

I did also say it seemed slow, which you agreed with.
It is now done and is far faster, how a 3.0 should be also with no water leak  ::)
As for "But hey, ya takes ya chance" I would not say that to anyone that had anything off me being honest, ah well I will know for another time ;)

Guessing that the HG's are normally fine if they have correct levels of antifreeze in?

Now wishing I didn't drain all mine out and leave a coolant flush in it for a couple of weeks  :-X :-[ (Rad is still partially blocked too  >:()

Seems fine at the moment and I’m probably worrying now, but I guess if HG's on 98's are a weak spot that its best to work with them rather than against!   ;D
Not sure servicing affects it - I'm a bit OTT with servicing, but mind went.  Obviously, who knows what it had in first 5 years of its life, but I have the receipts for it being changed twice in first 5 years...

I would do the head gaskets, its a proper job and should last for years, K  seal is a temporary bodge and causes more problems in the long run. I'm only down the raod from you if you need a hand ;)

If you did the cam cover gaskets recently with genuine parts then you can re-use them without any issues.

Re-use the cam seals (pattern parts are truely rubbish)

New dowty washers for the coolant bridge

New O ring seal for the main coolent pipe to block joint.

Genuine exhaust manifold to block and manifold to front pipe gaskets.

Trechii for head gaskets and bolts plus stem seals if doing a head re-furb.

Its also worth considering re-sealing the oil cooler whilst stripped down as its very easy!
