General Car Chat / Repairing a hammer
« on: 02 April 2016, 21:56:25 »
Evening guys.

So I have a large hammer with hickory handle from the below set

http://www.amazon.co.uk/BERGEN-Professional-Hickory-Handled-BER1651/dp/B006B3O5J2

So I pinned it a while ago to stop the head falling off but low n behold it hasn't held. I want to ditch the wood and weld an exhaust pipe to the hammer head like this:

As the head is hardened steel according to the description can I simply mig weld it to the pipe? Or should I grind the head surface down a tad?

General Car Chat / How to. Help please:)
« on: 29 March 2016, 20:45:42 »
Evening guys.

Please don't mock. But we have a focus of 05 vintage that needs a near side inner cv boot fitting. I have never replaced one of these. What's the procedure in general? Presuming drive shaft out, inner joint will tap off, new boot and reverse of removal. Anything to be cautious of? Thinking needle bearings flying out everywhere but any info would be sweet :-)

« on: 28 March 2016, 13:54:39 »
Stumbled across this bad boy last week. It's a beast and is really thick and meaty looking.

For the price too I was most impressed.

Anyone got one / got any more info on good bits and bad bits?

Evening gays, I mean guys. how are we???

Omega General Help / Multi ram operation clarification. . .
« on: 19 March 2016, 18:42:55 »
Evening gents.

Ok, so while me and TMF did my cam cover gaskets last week I took the opportunity to swap out the multi ram in the rear of the plenum with a spare one I had. Reason being is however many blips of the throttle I give it or 'give it death' I can't see the rear multi ram working.

So with new one installed (and I'll admit I only tried briefly blipping) I still can't see it move.

Reading Mark's guide it appears that it should move as soon as you put revs on and move again when it hits 3100rpm. Can I clarify that this is correct? If it's not when should I be seeing it move?

Ps front one moves when I 'give it death'.

No EML to signify an electrical fault.

Cheers kids  :y

Omega General Help / seat up/down not working
« on: 08 January 2016, 22:14:55 »
As above.

Anyone got a pic of the motor in situ? And I presume it has a connector that I can probe for voltage?

Checked fuses and both that could be possible causes are all good. Figured this was the easiest way to condemn the motor.

No whirring noise when activated.

Is this a motor that can even be replaced?

TIA

Omega General Help / Changing your ATF...
« on: 20 December 2015, 18:50:44 »
My auto box is shifting absolutely fine. Cars on 112,000 miles but never had an ATF change. I went to top the box up at around 100,000 miles and even though there's signs of a leak (at the tail of the GB where it meets the prop) it was virtually full and took hardly any to fill.

I have read that on high mileage vehicles (I'm sure in omega terms mines still a baby) that changing the fluid can actually cause the gearbox to fail shortly after.

Has anyone experience of this happening?

Cos if not I'm going to siphon the fluid sometime after Xmas and put new in  :y

Omega General Help / Codes 133 and 31 on 2.5 V6
« on: 16 December 2015, 20:25:21 »
Evening guys, hope you're all well :)

Got the check engine light come on about 20 miles from home today  ::) I had a paperclip and the internet so I managed to get the codes  :y

31 - EGR voltage low
133 - intake valve 2 voltage low

Luckily I think I have the answer.

I replaced my aux belt tensioner at the weekend. Being a ham-fisted oaf I broke the part that covers the wiring loom at the side that slides out...

Assuming ''intake valve 2'' is the front multiram valve and the wiring for the EGR meets in this loom I'm going to say that by not being able to put this piece of plastic cover back I've left the wires exposed to heat and these two have melted/broken??? Therefore, remove the loom tray, track the wiring, solder if necessary, get a new cover!

Unless theres something you think ive missed that's obvious? :)

General Car Chat / Recommendations on a torch if anyone wants one
« on: 13 December 2015, 09:42:30 »
We get reps coming round selling all manner of tools and usually I am not interested. But we had a rep from euroshiteparts come round the other day. He demonstrated this  rechargeable LED torch and omg it lit up the entire shop  ;D

If you're say working on a strut and you shine your torch in the wheel arch area usually what you want to see is obscured by a shadow that the light from the torch creates. But this really did light up the whole area. I'm not very technical but the light is very 'white' also and really does light up everything. . . . Just don't look directly at it!

Anyways we usually avoid their parts as thy tend to be really poor quality (especially their window regulators) but this torch is awesome.

Not sure on its longevity. It's a slimline one and it does look like it wouldn't take too many drops to break it (my draper one I must've dropped a thousand times and apart from a slightly scuffed case it's still working great).

The company make is toptech. Never heard of them.

But they have a retractable work light that I may buy to see how that goes and perhaps keep this one for interior work like blower motors, pollen filters etc  :y

General Car Chat / Omega tyres: what's the cheapest?
« on: 25 November 2015, 18:22:50 »
Can't quite believe I'm starting a tyre thread  :-[ :-[ :-[

But, cheapest I've found is £33+VAT at local tyre shop. ''Mytyres'' can't better that. Anywhere else online I can buy? I've tried Blackcircles also but no joy.

Just want a couple of ditch-finders to cover me until I'm a millionaire next summer (or by the time I've managed to save some dough :)

General Car Chat / Inspection of the Contitech belt kit reveals...
« on: 09 November 2015, 10:59:46 »
As you may know I, with the help of TB, replaced my timing belt kit yesterday from a Contitech with a Gates kit. The Contitech kit was 2 years old and had only done 10,000 miles.

The howling I sometimes got has gone.

Belt looks a bit worn to me but no obvious signs of imminent failure. in my opinion.

Tensioner and upper idler have no play or slop when you spin it but they do have some interesting ''scoring'' marks on the parts that contact the belt. Normal for two years of use? No idea.

HOWEVER, the lower idler has lots of forward and back play in the bearing. It also appears to have small particles of belt material baked on to it.

I assume this isn't normal.

If needed, I will post a video of the play in it.

So. Conclusion. A duff idler. Unless anyone confirms this play is normal.  :y

Omega General Help / Pas pump question
« on: 08 November 2015, 18:24:42 »
Hi guys,

We had a Vauxhall vivaro in the other day and I replaced the pas pump. Boss said these are common for leaking because there's a big core plug on the back that comes away from the body.

Does the omegas pump have this same core plug at the back? Looking at a used egay pump it appears that it does have this. Can someone confirm?

I had my paw on the pump today and it felt most wet at the back. The union on top also didn't appear to be leaking
