General Car Chat / SS or FS oil ?
« on: 01 August 2013, 22:24:46 »
We've just changed my wife's Freelander for a Nissan Note ( welcome to the future of motoring in Ireland  >:()
The NNOF seems to be populated ,admin'd and supported by 65 to 70 year old index linked driving glove equipped retired civil servants.
They all insist that the Note has to run on 5w-30 FS oil although looking through the manual at no point does it state that the only recommendation being to use Nissan Oil although the spec cannot be found anywhere. The API is SJ and the SAE is 5w-30 or even 10w-40 .
http://www.api.org/certifications/engineoil/pubs/upload/engineoilguide_march2010.pdf
Now , I've never used FS oil in any of our cars prefering 10w=40 SS and changing it ,along with the filter, every 4 to 5K miles mainly due to the short journeys they are used for .
So my belief is that FS is desirable for high performance, turbo'd or extended service intervals but SS is more than adequate for ordinary cars with shorter service intervals .        ?

General Discussion Area / Wireless Intercom
« on: 09 April 2013, 23:01:39 »
Just spent an hour trying to find a plug n talk type of wireless intercom to use between house and workshop. I'm looking for the type that transmit over the 240v ring main but a true intercom rather than a baby monitor. I thought it'd be a simple look on Ebay and order job but found only a couple and they had poor reviews on Amazon >:(
I thought these would be common and freely available  ..........
Tried Ebay UK, DE  , Maplins and Amazon , any other suggestions  ?

General Discussion Area / The making of a car ........
« on: 10 March 2013, 23:58:29 »
I watched that documentery on the Ford  Dagenham plant last night and watched the minion of workers banging, stretching ,pulling and lifting almost every component into the cars during their trip down the assembley line .
It looked every bit as grim and tedious as those being interviewed said .
Then I saw this tonight and realised how long ago and far away those days are now.......

General Discussion Area / Cross site scripting ?
« on: 15 January 2013, 20:14:55 »
Was given a link to a site from owner of a similar car to mine re supplier of copies of underbonnet decals. He has purchased from them .
When I attempt to open the site it opens partially but a strip window at the top of the page states "Internet Explorer has modified this page to prevent cross site scripting "
No access can be got to any of the options on the site .
I've never seen this before , does anyone know what causes it and if there is a solution ?
Here is the site , I've not had any problems after attempting to open it but perhaps you should consider before opening.

General Car Chat / Shipping parts from Germany.
« on: 05 January 2013, 12:13:31 »
I call on the fountain of knowledge within OOF .  ;D
After much consideration I'm looking for a particular set of wheels to my classic BMW .
They are very rare and expensive in UK/Ireland but are more affordable ,available and with a choice of condition ,size and offset in Germany.
So far the sellers cant or wont offer the shipping to UK/Ireland ( which I can understand ) although other sellers of different wheels do , and at a very reasonable sum which can be as low as €70 to € 100.
I have brought large parts inc. wheels and tyres from UK to Ireland many times but the quotes given to me by the companies I have used to do the same from Germany are too expensive to make the purchase viable.
I'd like to be able to arrange the collection of wheels only from within Germany to be shipped to Ireland arranged for and by myself.
Speed of delivery isn't an issue so surface shipment is quite acceptable .
Can anyone who has done this , or indeed any member within or bordering Germany help me with any contacts or companies that would undertake this service ?
Don

General Car Chat / Possibly the end of my Omega ownership......
« on: 22 December 2012, 19:11:49 »
Well ,I've been thinking about this for a some time now but after checking my annual mileage on the Omega and finding only 2090 very enjoyable  miles driven in 12 months the cold hard facts are difficult to ignore .
The gombeens in power over here have rasied the annual roadtax on my 2.0Lt to €710 a year . Add to that the cost of  insurance , NCT (mot) ,general servicing / repairs and petrol and it just isn't economically viable to spend that amount of money on a vehicle that is probably worth not much more than the total annual outlay irrespective of it's condition.
So thank you you bunch of jumped up school teachers you have destroyed my enjoyment in motoring and successfully reaped a nett loss to your exchequer by being so rampantly greedy and forcing me to re evaluate my position.
This household's contribution in road tax to the blaggards in Dublin is currently circa € 1700 a year  ::)which is in anyones eyes a grotesque slice of anyones GDI .
We have another car , van and "fun " car so won't be short of transport .
I shall now embark on a focused and relentless search for a well cared for 1983 or earlier E28/E12  BMW or similar to qualify for the over 30 year old  €56 a year roadtax applied to Vintage / classics. That will be my "daily " and they can go and dance round a bonfire for the difference....
This is not a goodbye , yet... but it's highly unlikely I will renew the annual road tax with the impending other severe austerity taxes we are about to be hit with over here and as they will never come down again .......well ?
My advice to you all back in UK is for God's sake vote UKIP and avoid being swallowed into the Eurozone because we are all doomed over here ........

Bloody headlamp adjusted went "pop"! today whilst I was changing a side light bulb.
Are the alluminium adjusters still available ?
Going by the interest in the recent ones that were offered for sale I'm a little pessamistic........

Omega General Help / Headlamp bulbs
« on: 28 November 2012, 17:35:15 »
I've changed out the standard halogen bulbs on a couple of our cars and Van for Osram Nighbreakers and am very impressed with the difference .
All have been H4 units .
I just looked at the Omega and see it's H1 fitment but it seems to have a single terminal on the dip and two terminal plug  connection on MB . Are they both H1's ?

General Car Chat / Santa came early.
« on: 24 November 2012, 22:54:33 »
Been looking for "another " E24 BMW after the one I won on E bay several months ago turned out to initially have been written off twice ,1990 and 2007 , and was still Cat C listed. I then discovered that in fact the reg. no. didn't belong to a blue 628 but a silver 635...... >:(
Long story short it was a very unpleasent event that put me off the search for some time .
Anyway started again back in October but was getting very dispirited until this one popped up , an '81 635 with a reported intersting history but I'll wait till DVLA confirm it .
Flew up to NI yesterday , viewed it, test drove it, bought it for a very satisfying sum , tore up my return flight ticket and drove it 325 miles back home . Seller was an incredibly interesting and charismatic guy and I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent with him. He had an amazing collection of cars and motor racing  memorabilia.
Turbine smooth ,almost imperceptable auto changes kept it at 60mph/2.5Krpm and it has returned an acceptable mpg. 70K warranted miles been in storage since 2004 . Needs rear arches partially replaced and a general spruce up & valet and all Hpi checks show all OK .
Very happy I am....... :)

Oh and many, many thanks to the members on here who were prepared to go out of their way to help me on the search for a car , you know who you are ...... :y

General Discussion Area / London Olympic Stadium .
« on: 10 November 2012, 16:03:10 »
This is utterly incomprehensible . >:(
http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/news/london-2012-olympic-stadium-stay-shut-four-four-114027038.html

Six years and £500 million to build ,used for four weeks and then shut down for another four years and another £300 million spent .
How on earth could the cretinous designers and architects not build a stadium in six years ,that with minor alterations if need be , be immediatly put back to public use after the Olympics. I mean , what can you use an Olympic Stadium for that will attract the numbers required to sustain it's viability  apart from football and athletics ? ( Formula 1 ? ..... Oh FFS  ! )
So by the end of 2016 ish... you'll have,  Eh lets see , Oh yeah, a ten year old  £ 800 million Olympic Stadium. ::)
