SWMBO put some things from the shed for sale on FaceAche's marketplace. Very soon after the add was placed someone contacted her to say they'd have the dog cage. Great! So she gave him our address for him to call for it .... he then says that his son will collect it & he now wants to pay via PayPal. SWMBO says I don't have PayPal & want cash please. Oh ... you can just download it he says, I know says SWMBO, my husband has it. Next message from him is ... what's your husbands email address & I'll pay him.
We then just ignored him & since heard no more from him.


I smell a scam but don't know what it is. I guess that he pays into my PayPal, collects dog crate then claims some kind of dispute & gets his money back from me ..... 

Why would you want to pay someone £30 via PayPal if you weren't up to something shady?

I'm not sure if it's a scam ,or just an awkward buyer 
Either way it's not worth the hassle .
someone with actual money £££  will buy it

The problem is......Facebook marketplace. Use it at your peril. I wouldn't have been so polite. It's cash or eff off.

My missus has bought & sold loads on FB marketplace but there are plenty of nutters/scammers on it, if she has any doubts about buyers/sellers they just get blocked simple.

Society is full of nutters/scammers so wherever you advertise your stuff for sale, you will come across them. 

I think Facebook Marketplace is great. It's free to advertise and has good reach. Why people pay to advertise stuff these days I don't know.

‘How the scam works: Scammers use hacked PayPal accounts or stolen credit cards to transfer money to your account. If you accept the money, you'll receive a message claiming it was a mistake along with a request to refund it to a different account. If you follow through, you'll be responsible for the missing funds.’

May or may not be the case but always best to wait for a cash buyer.

I bought my Range Rover off it, only had to travel to the next village, genuine chap selling it no pressure & a really fair price ,in fact SWMBO actually showed the ad to me.

Having just cleared my late parents house, my sister wanted to make a few quid by advertising some of the furniture, some of which was practically unused due to my parents being bed-bound for several years.
She put a few items on FB Marketplace and instantly got messages saying ’I can’t collect myself so I’ll send a courier, who will then transfer the funds to ……..’  ? ? ?
She just ignored these people as she suspected a scam and she eventually sold most of the stuff to cash buyers.

Could be genuine of course, but younger generations* dont like cash, and want to pay with whatever electronic gizmo they cuddle.

I've got no choice at the moment, I have to like cash. Long story involving my lad and casinos.
