Miggenium Falcon - (stage 1 complete)

After my minor mishap on the 1st day I bought her  >:( the car has had the front bumper repaired and resprayed; whilst it was having that done the Steinmetz front valance was added to compliment the Steinmetz grille.

Side skirts, rear apron and rear wheel spacers are on next month's agenda.





And 1 hour later after a quick clean






And as she was a month ago when I bought her...

Same colour as mine.  The grille makes a world of difference to the front end, as does the valance.  If you don't mind me asking, how much moola did the grille set you back, and where did you find it?

Very sure it's the same car, but the original car pictures were taken by the previous owner and I don't think his camera did the car's colour justice personally speaking.

I was dubious before I went to look at the car as I was really after silver as 1st, or black as a, 2nd choice, but when I pulled up outside I immediately fell in love with the colour.

It's called "Petrol Blue", but it's right on the cusp of blue & green and reminds me of peacocks neck. Since buying it I've noticed loads of Corsas, Astras and Vectras that are close in colour, but I don't think it suits them in the same way as on the Omega. (Just my personal opinion.) I've seen one other Omega facelift in Bedford the same colour, but that's an estate CD deisel; it looks good in an estate too.

See above on the colour; good choice  :y

I got the grille and valance from Steinmetz UK, and paid the price indicated.

I personally prefer it to the Irmscher grille as it sits inside the recess rather than having the lip at top.

I also prefer the valance than the full Irmscher front bumper as it retains the recessed line that continues round the line of the door trims and makes the car look a bit sleeker. I think the Irmscher one's look great, but just a little smooth on the bumpers' side panels.

I've removed the Steinmetz badge from the grille and had the recess in the valance which is designed for the little sticker filled.



To be honest I'm trying to work out a way to fill the grille with 6 horizontal slats rather than the criss-cross (a la Senator style) slats as I think it will match the grille lower down in the bumper better, but that's a project in itself. there's a thread here about it.



I wish I could find the wing mirrors too, but they're all sold out  :'(

The pictures a little bit blurry, but can you make out the lettering under the main plate number?

The plates are legal on a pre-"51" plate car (mine's a "Y" plate) provided they were made before August 2001; which of course mine were :y

The 1st owner in March 2001 must have had this weird premonition that the domain name www.omegaowners.com would become a life-line one day.

Any plate on a car registered later than the 1st of August 2001 (51 plate onwards) must have the name of the plate maker included at the bottom and within a given size, but not any particular font or colour.

The same goes for any plate made after that date for an older car, but this is the bit which is difficult to enforce realistically.

Like the grill and absolutely love the valance. Seriously thinking about a similar one for mine. My CDX is silver but like the colour of your car better. 8-)

I must admit I was worried about that too. The guy who sold them to me (thanks to your tip BTW :y) offered me silly money for my 17" Elite wheels for a mate of his with a Corsa, but I had to ask him to hold off for a month until I had reassured myself that the new tyres weren't too harsh.

I'm really impressed, they actually feel better, not too harsh at all; I'd say they were firmer and less squishy or floaty, but definitely not what I would call harsh by any stretch. They even passed the test with SWMBO which is a big test. I don't think I'll go back.

There is still a part of me that wonders whether keeping the old wheels and using them with proper winter tyres for 6 months of the year may not be a bad idea, but I remember back when I had a Carlton CDX 2.6 that I changed the tiny 15" wheels for 17s and had the same thought, but never actually felt the need in the end.

Your car rocks on every level ! Fantastic looking bit of kit and those Snow Flakes make it stand out.

How much were the wheels if you don't mind me asking and what wheel spacers are on it ? I must admit the Steinmetz grille looks the business. I have been looking for a replacement for mine and I think I will go for that instead of the Irmscher.

Thanks for the comments :)

The wheels cost me £700 with very good tyres (well 3, 1 had a bad puncture and was FUBAR)

The wheels have an offset of ET45 so would be 7mm further in than the standard Elite wheels at ET38. The spacers I have on at the moment are Eibach pro and are +25mm on each rear corner and +10mm on each front corner, but beware the +10mm are not hub-centric and I wouldn't recommend them; not that I've had any problems, but I don't trust them the same (they needed 40mm bolts instead which I'm not so confident in). I'm waiting for a pair of hub centric +16mm each corner for the front which should be with me by the end of the week. The net effect will be +18mm at the rear and +9mm at the front corners.

Its all booked into wheels-in-motion for a proper set-up in the next week or so.

The Steinmetz side skirts are down the paint shop and go on by the weekend too.

I was considering lowering it, but I've decided against it for the moment; there's nothing wrong with the suspension (self-levelling) and I like the fact that the car is still subtle enough to look "factory".

Whichever it is you certainly have to my mind, one of the best looking motors I have seen for a while. If you get bored of it by just after Christmas this year then give me a shout as I would have it off your hands straight away although I do realise the chances are slim !

i like everything you have done aside from the wheels....wayyyyyy to blingy.....

up to that point you everything you had done was subtle, you would have to have another Omega next to it to figure out the differences.

Personally i love the 5 spoke 17'' elite rims, i want a set for the CDX, they have a certain quality about them

Thanks for the comments, I'm holding onto the original wheels for the moment until I see whether I like them or not.

So far all I've had are compliments that they look much more like the right size for the car and that they really suit it.

I take your point though and thanks for that, I realise that no car is going to please everyone, and some think the wheels are an improvement, some don't.

Thankfully, I do like them so far, but I still reserve the right, and retain the ability, to switch back if and when I feel like it, so nothing is lost really. I have deliberately made sure I went with standard Vx wheels with 5 big spokes which is close in design to the original set in an effort to avoid the "bling" aftermarket wheel look too much; personally I think it kind of succeeds...

I don't think the police will bother about the number plate, nor do I suspect that matters for insurance purposes, the lettering and spacing is all perfectly legal.

The insurance is affected by the modifications such as the front valance, wheels and 'soon to be' skirts though, but by a surpisingly small amount (about 10%). I checked 1st to make sure.

You have done a superb job already!   It is a very sexy looking car, and one that attracts me  far more than most :-* :-*!   Don't over cook it though as it just looks so good already, but I know what you boys are like with your toys and trying to achieve the ultimate ;) ;)

I do like the wheelbarrow handle exhaust boxes, but I don't like the Irmscher kits personally. It's the missing groove that lines up with the bottom edge of the door trims being missing that I'm not so keen on. I personall think it makes the car look a bit too heavy/blocky and it begins to lose the nice sleek lineswhich excentuate the length of the Omega.

I do have plans to change the exhaust eventually, but it would be a complete waste whilst I still have life in what I've got on there. When it does begin to give up I will be putting a Long-Life stainless exhaust on and that will have 2, or even 2 pairs of, out pipes.

I have a friend who owns a custom body shop and he is going to build me an appropriate bottom half to a standard rear bumper to go with it that will look standard unless you look very carefully. This will have space for the twin pipes and will be ever so slightly lower from the side view.

All that is a 'later-in-the-year' job.

Whichever it is you certainly have to my mind, one of the best looking motors I have seen for a while. If you get bored of it by just after Christmas this year then give me a shout as I would have it off your hands straight away although I do realise the chances are slim !

The 1st owner in March 2001 must have had this weird premonition that the domain name www.omegaowners.com would become a life-line one day.

Any plate on a car registered later than the 1st of August 2001 (51 plate onwards) must have the name of the plate maker included at the bottom and within a given size, but not any particular font or colour.

The same goes for any plate made after that date for an older car, but this is the bit which is difficult to enforce realistically.

I don't think the police will bother about the number plate, nor do I suspect that matters for insurance purposes, the lettering and spacing is all perfectly legal.

The insurance is affected by the modifications such as the front valance, wheels and 'soon to be' skirts though, but by a surpisingly small amount (about 10%). I checked 1st to make sure.

No pics to update as yet as I've just done 400 motorway miles in the rain, I'm too tired to take them today, the car is filthy and it is getting dark, but I went to Wheels-Inmotion this morning and had a full set of MV6 springs fitted to my Elite and had the self levelling adjusted to cope with the 15mm drop all round.

Does it feel better?

The car feels very good on the new MV6 springs. It's a very subtle change, but enough to know that it feels better. It seems to rise at the nose less than it did under acceleration and dip at the nose less than it did under braking. It pitches less into corners and recovers after a pothole more quickly than it did before.

On the run it is just as comfortable. If you were to try to pick fault with anything to do with comfort I'd say the car tends to trace the shape of the road more rather than float detached from it. I personally prefer that feeling. Weirdly enough the car feels smaller; more manageable if you know what I mean?

It reacts more like a new car. My friend has a Jag X-Type 3.0 and it feels more like that does now over bumps.

All of this must be borne in the context of 19" wheels with 235x35x19 tyres and a wider track than standard too due to Eibach pro-spacers.

It now looks set where I wanted it and less jacked in the air without looking 'slammed'.

Overall I'm very happy. :y
