Title: How easy it is to bring things to a halt
Post by: STEMO on 20 December 2018, 12:51:30
A couple of weeks ago there were two crashes on motorways which affected this region. One on the M62 and one on the M1. The whole of the South and West Yorkshire areas were totally gridlocked, as people tried to find alternative routes.
Today, we have one of our major airports brought to a standstill with a couple of drones.
Methinks a foreign actor or a group of home grown terrorists would have no problem at all paralysing large parts of the country without blowing themselves or anyone else up. No need for cyber attacks although, if used in common with the aforementioned actions, they could cause total panic.
How fragile our infrastructure is.

All the enemy has to do is hit our electrical distribution system.

Without power, no lights, no computers, no air or road traffic control, no water distribution, etc., etc. :o :o

Yes. I was reading earlier in the week that, although this scenario is used to frighten people, it is not as easy as it appears. And, of course, that would obviously be the act of a foreign power, whereas a few car crashes........

Russians use Ukraine as their cyberwarfare testing ground. They have already partially shut down their power grid which included a nuclear power station, :o have crashed their flight booking & display systems & shutdown bank's IT systems including ATMs. In the US and many other countries, including the UK, the Russians (and probably the Chinese) have penetrated the power distribution systems & installed malware to take control as & when. :-[ :( A real game of cat & mouse going on here which if successful will cost lives. >:(

Alternatively, grid shutdown maybe caused during the winter with increasing numbers of intermittent, mass bird slaughtering wind turbines & also the sun not shining due to thick overcast skies means all power grids are now much less stable. Where EU pollution/CO2 rules mean most of the UK coal power stations have been shut, due to this, our winter demand excess capacity is now around 0%. Australia have had two large grid shutdowns like this & restarting a grid is not easy. :-[ :-[ :-[

We discussed this at work when they were using trucks to plough into pedestrians, can you imagine the devastation if they got a few lorries on our motorways ? It could be total carnege just a matter of time unfortunately.

Talking of fragile infrastructure and terrorists. When I was in Israel about 20 years ago, I was told there is one reservoir for the whole country, which is the most guarded piece of water in the world. Imagine how many people in the region would love to drop a forty gallon drum of poisonous chemical in there.  :o

What is clearly needed is  an OOF squad. We clearly have the expertise to sort pretty much any problem and at short notice

Brexit stalled - no problem

Drone over Gatwick - no problem

Roadsnarl up - no problem

Just needs forum members to declare rheir skills and contact numbers on a register.  Would need funding of course.

And yet the main reservoir for this part of the world is a park that you're encouraged to visit. That sort of chemical warfare requires basic equipment, common knowledge, supplies and a small van.

Driving a truck at pedestrians sounds scary, but all it does is kill a few people. Smashing the same truck(petrol/chemical tanker for maximum effect) into an electricity substation could make an entire urban area unlivable: do it in the Medway Towns and you'll stop the sewage removal and treatment for nearly 1/4 million people as well as depriving them of power.
