Omega General Help / Re: Failed MOT

Tech 2 services available from http://theboy.omegaowners.com/tech2/prices.shtml

Or something like "My Naff Code Reader" can give you live readings if you like to do everything yourself http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1236032406

Hi whilst looking at the car earlier i noticed there was only 3 bolts holding the exhaust to the manifold, have now put all four bolts back in and put some gum gum on the gasket.
Could this have been the problem for the CO reading causing it to fail. :-/

Or on the other hand....
If air was being drawn in to the exhaust it would increase the quantity of oxygen in the exhaust & fool the lambda sensor in to reporting that the engine was running lean. The ECU would then alter the fuel trim to chuck more fuel in.

Once you have fixed any obvious faults (such as leaking manifolds and blocked air filters) you will save yourself a lot of wasted time if you can get someone who has Tech2 (and the skills to use it) to read the live values and fuel trims.

When the clutch pedal did that on my previous Omega it was the flexible hydraulic hose between the clutch master cylinder and the clutch slave cylinder that had failed.

Omegas have a concentric slave cylinder that encircles the gearbox input shaft. The flexible pipe isn't expensive but it is a gearbox out job to disconnect the flex pipe from the slave cylinder and connect the new one  :(

There was a thread on here last week about BBA-reman. A reconditioning company that can take your ECU, refurbish it and send it back to you with a guarantee for about £100.

The people who had used them seemed very pleased with the results. (& Tech 2 wasn't required)

Have you noticed poor fuel consumption? To cause sooty plugs you would use a lot of petrol.

Are your crank breathers clear? If the crankcase is pressurised then oil could be forced passed the piston rings and valve seals and oil could also be fouling the idle control valve.

A sticky ICV will probably work OK when it is open with a cold engine (& fast tick over) but cause more problems when it is nearly closed.

Omega General Help / Re: heat shield loose
« on: 18 September 2009, 12:25:33 »
The heat shields on my 94 V6 exhaust downpipes slowly disintegrated & then disappeared.  oops ::)

I bought some exhaust wrap from a motorsport shop to wrap the pipes with to prevent overheating but never got around to fitting it...

On the underside of the car, between the centre silencer boxes and the body, are some big heat shields. On mine one of the threaded studs on the underside of the car sheared off when I undid the nut to release the heatshield to get to the handbrake adjustment. I eventually stuck some sticky foam pads to the edge of the heatshields where the stud was missing to stop them vibrating together.

Don't forget it's worth doing the clutch clylinder in the box at the same time.

Nah, unlike the front wheel drives, the coaxial slave on the Omega is bullet proof
The flexible pipe isn't however (and it is a gearbox out job to change it :( )

Omega General Help / Re: external oil cooler mod help
« on: 15 September 2009, 13:57:21 »
I think the oil from the oil pump goes through the filter and then up one pipe to the oil cooler then back down the other.

These two connections would be the natural place to connect an external oil cooler, there is no need for a sandwich plate.

I don't really understand what you hope to gain from an external air to oil cooler. The built in water to oil cooler also acts as a heater to warm the oil more quickly after a cold start and will give more accurate temperature control than an air cooled one can. It also works when there is no air flow through the front of the car and results in a more compact package than an air cooled unit  :-?

Omega General Help / Re: A little help please
« on: 16 September 2009, 11:37:24 »
On pre-facelift Omega's the FAI pump blows air into the exhaust manifold at the same time as the engine is running rich during cold start up. The extra air allows the unburnt fuel to burn in the cats for a faster warm up.

Because the cats have started from cold there shouldn't be a risk of overheating them & because the FAI pump only runs for a minute or so the engine will probably not be running at anything more than a fast idle so there shouldn't be a big thermal shock for the cats.

The FAI pump was dropped for 2.6 & 3.2 engines which would indicate that the benefits didn't justify the extra complexity.

The pipework between the FAI pump and the stainless steel air injectors is only rubber and incapable of carrying hot exhaust gases. If you don't want an engine bay fire then you need either working non return valves or you need to plug the air injection ports.

Omega General Help / Re: VENTILATION STOPS 2.5 CD

I think it was next to the pollen filter behind the scuttle.

(My car was a 1994 model and my memory is a little hazy because it was 6 years ago that I had the problem.)

Its possible that the one way valve in the vac tank on the pollen filter housing is goosed......you can fit one for an aquarium in series to sort.

Do check for chafed vac pipes though
Have you checked the non return valve? or added one as suggested?

My last Omega behaved as you have described but seemed to fix itself after I had messed around blowing & sucking to test the non return valve.

Omega General Help / Re: New Battery Required
« on: 10 September 2009, 22:07:56 »
Home again after a short holiday.

1500 miles over the last 10 days, battery borrowed from wifes Golf worked perfectly  :)

Windows worked fine after resetting by pressing 'up' on each windows switch until the relay clicked. Sunroof worked fine without being reset.

I put the Unipart battery in yesterday. It is about an inch shorter than the OE battery.

Wife was particularly taken by the 'little overcoat' on the Omega battery ;D

Omega bursts into life the way it should now :y

Omega General Help / Re: New Battery Required
« on: 29 August 2009, 21:47:28 »
The battery in the Omega is reading 10.5v so it has one dead cell. My fear is that if I keep driving it something is going to go pop.

I don't really want to spray the engine bay with sulphuric acid  :(

The battery in the wifes car looks like the one in the Omega and I would be happy to borrow it if I could find something that showed the Unipart recommendation for a V6 Omega.
